If you are anything like our family then the build up to Christmas involves copious amounts of baking. When I got married, not only did I get myself a husband but I also was handed 4 sides of laminated A4 cards covered with recipes for baking Christmas cookies. And come what may every Christmas I have to bake each and every one of the recipes on those cards regardless of whether anyone in our house actually eats the cookies or not.
Whenever I start rolling my eyes at the prospect of endless baking, I remember that it is a family tradition for my husband and that my girls simply love helping out. To make the whole thing a bit more fun for me I decided that each year I would make my girls some aprons to help with the baking, and thereby stamp my print on the family tradition. (my poor girls – not only will they have to carry on the baking tradition when they are grown up but they will also have the task of sewing aprons!!!)

When I saw Novella, a new line by Valori Wells, I just knew it would be perfect for this year’s aprons. And it totally is! Head on over to the Freespirit blog to find the tutorial for how to make this simple apron. You could whip up a couple by lunchtime!
You can download the template here.

Favorite Christmas bakery treat? A tie between Rosettes, from an old Swedish recipe handed down in the family; and cut-out cookies with messy frosting and gobs of sprinkles.
Hmm.. I love cinnamon sticks
Pretty apron
I love truffles. Always know its Christmas when my auntie whips out the truffles when we stop by for a cuppa!
Mini Christmas puddings – they are delicious and look great!
Oh the curses of traditions – I made Christmas cake in Sept because that’s what my mum did (mine is much nicer though!). My favourite thing to bake are mince pies with my homemade mincemeat. Not sure I’ll have time for aprons!
Christmas tree out of rocky road -divine and easy
Super cute – the apron and your little girl! Really lovely x
Christmas treats has to be my mum’s mince pies. Nice crispy pastry rather than that thick crumbly stuff you get in shop bought ones. And just the right amount of mincemeat. I like them straight out of the oven, but after that I like to zap one in the microwave for 10 seconds as they are so much nicer warm x
Mince pies!!
hands down–shortbread
My Mom’s Canadian Rum Cake, yum!
I love my Mom’s Gingerbread Boys – we loved the icing, so we would add lants and vests and loads of hair, etc… They, of course, had Red Hots for the eyes (very spooky) and buttons. Yummy!
I love the cute apron, thanks for the template. We always make some ginger and cinnamon hearts, and usually some shortbread too as well as lots of mince pies. We are rather traditional at christmas.
My favorite was always little chocolate-filled tartlets that my grandmother made. They’re supposed to have a pecan filling, but she made some with chocolate for those of us who don’t like nuts, and they were the best!
Kolacky!!! It’s an old family recipe and we look forward to them each year.

My mouth is watering right now for some Swedish Pepperkakor cookies, rolled out really thin in shapes and frosted/decorated. Oh my gosh – the whole house takes on the spirit of Christmas when those are baking.
Hello dollies are my absolute favorite. I make my mom make them every year.
My husband’s “buckeyes” (peanut butter cream center, dark chocolate coating). And shortbread. Lots of shortbread. And nuts-and-bolts mix. Argh, I can’t decide!
I think baking the shortbread cookies that are made from a recipe handed down from my maternal grandmother, that my mom always made. they melt in your mouth and always signal to my brain that its christmas!

I’m gluten free, so our favorite cookie to bake is a chocolate dipped almond macaroon. Delicious and gluten free. It’s my go to for cookie exchanges and parties. Thanks!
One of our favorites are the ‘Sandies’, which also goes by the name ‘Mexican Wedding Cookies’. I have to make multiple batches because my husband loves them so much!
Homemade mince pies fresh out of the oven.
My favorite treats are sand tarts. I used to make them with my Godmother. I love shortbread and pecans, and these are wonderful. What a cute apron. Have fun!
Cappuccino cookies are my favorite!
My Oma makes wonderful apricot and almond tortes with home made buttercream frosting. They are the first to go on the sweets table.
Peppermint Bark is my favorite thing to make during the holidays! Ooh, or gingerbread cookies!
My favorites are my grandma’s fig-filled cookies…yumza!
My hubby’s grandma Maryanne makes the world’s best sugar cookies – she ships them across the country to all of the relatives (along with a smorgasbord of other cookies), and somehow they survive the trip intact AND then stay fresh for at least 2 weeks (not that they usually last that long). They’re amazing, I have no idea what sort of magic she sprinkles in them.
this post made me laugh because someone has to bake Grandma’s Orange Peel Yuletide Cookies every year, even though no one really likes them. They are flat, tangy, lumpy cut-outs with red hots on them – but still – someone must to do it! my favorite recipe is a delicious gingerbread that works for cut-outs or sanded with sugar. delicious!
Every year I look forward to making (and eating) chocolate cookies with Rollo candies baked inside. They’re crisp and gooey at the same time.
What a beautiful apron. I love that you are making aprons each year and teaching your own kids to bake and carry on that tradition. I am totally jealous of you because I had three boys and while they did like learning to cook, they ate more than we ended up making most of the time. I always told them their generation weren’t taught to cook OR they just don’t seem to want to do it from the girls they brought home. I explained that if they think they’re going to find a wife that cooks like their mother they’ll never get married so they had better learn to cook. LOL And they did. They wanted to learn my secret recipes I’d created and begged me to get them out of my head and onto paper because they were afraid they would be gone when I was. Your girls will love the tradition and remember you for a long time.
Oh my favorite must make yearly are Rosettes. Those are my favorites.
My favorite is a tri-colored marzipan cookie. Thanks for the apron templet, will make one for my granddaughter.
Yay! What a great project! My favorites are the sugar cookies that my SIL makes – I have her recipe, but not her mad skills!
I am in love with this apron. A must make for my 4 year old!
Oh man I would have killed for some fail-proof recipes, if Mr Kipling can bake it, I can heat it up and add cream!
Super apron x
I love the buttery Roll Cookies recipe from Joy of Cooking. Add some vanilla icing and a few sprinkles, and I’m a happy woman.
Love rum balls!! and cut out cookies!
Chocolate rum balls are our favourite too! I’m not much of a baker, but chocolate is a must!

pecan pie fatteng but worth every bite thanks for the giveaway
Stollen is my favourite, it has to be homemade.
Your little one is so cute! She has your smile
Is it correct that the template is just 1 page with 1 shape? We don’t really have a baking tradition at Christmas over here. Laura Jane promised to send me some mince pies so maybe that will become a favourite!
Oh, that litlle lad really looks like a Mini-Tacha! She is sooooo cute. And the apron you made is gorgeous! Fun thing to declare it a family tradition to add new ones each year… That way I could come up with another one – but the. again, boys’ aprons are not as much fun as girls’. Sigh.
My favorite christmas treat is Lebkuchen. I guess thats ginger bread in english?!
I love making the Christmas morning muffins from the Domestic Godess book by Nigella Lawson. And fruit crumble, and… So many things!
My fiance makes these raw sugar chili almonds that we refer to as “crack almonds” because you can’t stop eating them.
Love the apron! My girls had little aprons when they were little, sweet memories! We love to bake cookies, bake fruit cake and make truffles and fudge… lots of sweets! lol
Thanks for the giveaway!
I love Truffles….. yummmmmmm….!!!!!!
My mother’s pecan pie is wonderful. Thanks for the giveaway too! I wonder if your apron tutorial can be expanded to make a little girl skirt or jumper?
Every year we make biscuits as presents for all the neighbours. A happy tradition
I’m a fan of ginger snap cookies. The soft chewy kind fo me!
I still love my mom’s candy cane cookies — basic sugar cookie dough (1/2 is colored red) rolled into “snakes” and then twisted together to make a candy cane shape, then sprinkled with crushed peppermint candies. So pretty and so delicious.
What a cute apron, and a cute little girl wearing it!
I use a sugar cookie recipe every year from Southern Living magazine. When my kids were young, they would help, now my small grandchildren help.
oh, how i love mince meat pie! my very favorite! unfortunately, i am the only family member who likes it!
I love gingerbread!
sugercookies are w/ icing are mine and my families favorite holiday treat!
Cookies are the favourite treat here, I bake them and every single one is happily eaten up. Thanks for the giveaway and the aprons are very cute.
My mom used to make simple sugar cookies that were so delicious. It may not be the recipe as much as the memories, but I use the same recipe every year, and am happier for it.
Adorable apron. I have a chocolate biscotti recipe that I make for the holidays that is so good. It goes great with hot chocolate and with coffee.
Mincemeat tarts are a Christmas tradition for us.
Well we dont celebrate Christmas but I love plum cakes and never miss a chance to buy it.
I bake pecan butterscotch chip cookies and peanut butter cookies, plus at least 2 other kinds of cookies. I try to test out a newly found recipe each year. Thanks for the tutorial & the chance to win.
Your daughter is just too cute! The apron is, too
My baking for Christmas is cookies – Spritz, shortbread, chocolate chip, sugar, etc., but my most favorite is a fruit cake that starts the year before and is smothered in ‘spirits’ during the entire year – talk about moist. Thanks for the apron and giveaway.
Anything with peppermint!
Your daughter looks beautiful in her apron. Every year I make a gingerbread house covered in sweets ( which get eaten first!) and I love to make Nigella Lawson’s Christmas rocky road. It is divine, but if you ate it all the time you’d end up the size of a real house!
Toffee, fudge, peanut butter balls, ginger snaps! Wouldn’t be the same without ‘em!
I usually make a nut roll pastry that is a family favorite from my childhood
Millionaire’s Shortbread (a layer of shortbread topped with a layer of caramel then a layer of chocolate on top)
A 9×13 pan has 1# of butter.
(True story: after I made this the first Christmas with my husband’s family they decided that maybe I wasn’t QUITE the demon spawn they thought).
Making Christmas cookies tops our “Must Do” traditions. The apron is adorable!
Gingerbread definitely. But also Christmas cake. Though by mid-January everyone is tired of the Christmas cake.
In Spain we don’t have christmas baked goods, but we do have turrón which is a terrific sweet treat!
Our family favorite are crisp ginger snaps. Oh so good with a cup of tea….
Thanks for the chance!
I love apple, chestnut and sausagemeat stuffing.
Thanks for the chance.
Great apron.
Oh I love mince pies.
Hmmm… I’m not sure I have a favorite holiday favorite. Probably candy cane cookies. They bring back so many memories of chidlhood!
I love pecan pie from a bakery I think they tast better when someone else make it
I can’t wait until I make Peppermint Pinwheel Cookies and Pecan Sandies!
I come from a family of little tradition, but have been busy making my own the last couple of years. I have adapted a version of date, pistachio and chocolate balls and will make these along with Rhubarb Champagne. (already brewing). We have a lot of Rhubarb growing in our area, of which i dont normally eat, but the last couple of seasons i have made a few chutneys and Champagne!
There are so many wonderful goodies to bake at Christmas time. Among my favorites are Pfeffernusse cookies and mincemeat pie.
