Do you use Aurifil?  Do you like it?  Which weight threads do you prefer?  Aurifil have provided us with ten sample packs for a Designer Challenge so we need ten willing volunteers who are up for a challenge.

First here’s a quick round up of the five threads you will get in the sample pack and what you might use them for.

50wt – orange spool – 100% cotton – the lightest weight Aurifil thread.  Ideal for machine and hand piecing and hand applique. Can also be used for machine and hand quilting for a more subtle look.

40wt – green spool – 100% cotton – slightly heavier.  Ideal for machine quilting.  Can also be used for hand and machine piecing and hand and machine applique.

28wt – grey spool – heavier again.  Ideal for machine and hand quilting when you want the thread to show more clearly on your quilted.  Also for raw edge applique finishing on the machine or by hand.

12wt – red spool – comes in cotton or wool – ideal for embroidery, cross-stitch, hand blanket stitch and similar decorative stitches.  Can also run through the machine for a very strong quilted look – on my machine straight line quiting is fine with the 12wt but FMQ is a bit of a struggle but not impossible!

So we are looking for readers to participate in this Design Challenge.   You can make whatever you like with these threads.  Something pieced.  Some applique.  Some FMQ or straight line quilting.  Some cross stitch or embroidery.  Or a mixture of all of those.  Leave a comment on this post and ten readers will be picked, notified and sent a sample pack of five threads.

Catherine November 21, 2011

I would love to take up the challenge!

Kristy November 21, 2011

Hmm the ideas are running around in my head already…a hand and/or machine quilted whole cloth mini perhaps?

Vicki November 21, 2011

Sounds like a fun challenge!

Sunnybec November 21, 2011

Would love to, but think living in France may just exclude me.

Catriona Daynes November 21, 2011

Im in England but would love to try. I’m struggling with cones of thread as they don’t fit on my pfaff creative. This is frustrating as I’ve a beautiful range of colour I can only hand sew.

janed13@bigpond.net.au November 21, 2011

I am in Australia and use Aurifil 50wt for piecing and quilting. I would love to be part of this designer challenge.

Mary November 21, 2011

I use the 50wt orange for piecing always. Love it. Keeps the scant 1/4 inch seams perfect. Would love to try the others. Mary

Anne November 21, 2011

I’ve tried the 40 and 50 wts but love to try the heavier ones, especially the wool.

Ethne November 21, 2011

I’ve been gifted a few spools of Auriful but am keeping them to use with the FQ’s they came with for a personal FQ challenge project however with my self exploration in FMQ I’d love the challenge of exploring with the 40 or 28 weight in a zentangleish quilt project piece – so yes I’m up for a challenge

fortifor@planet.nl November 21, 2011

I’ve pieced, stitched, appliqued and quilted with Aurifil threads for some years now and I love them! It would be fun to design something with a mixture use of the threads, so I’m in for a challenge!

    nicolette November 21, 2011

My first comment leaves me with an email address…. so another one to try with my name and URL:

Jody C November 21, 2011

I would love to give this a shot! your thread is the best!!

JoAn GODFREY November 21, 2011

i could see some applique in the future with those threads. then some basic quilting. i am not very experienced with FMQ yet.

Machelle November 21, 2011

I can’t resist a challenge! BRING IT ON!

Gillian November 21, 2011

Beautiful colors! Including my favorite: orange. I’d love the challenge.

cecilie.rask@gmail.com November 21, 2011

I would love to try… I do my fair share of hand quilting, hand piecing as well as applique on machine and regular quilting but have never tried Aurofil because I can’t get it here in Denmark.

Pippa November 21, 2011

ohh I’m quite desperate to get my hands on more aurifil. Here in France it’s really difficult to get hold of and expensive *sigh*. I ordered some 50wt from the US to try piecing with and have moved onto 40wt for my first attempts at quilting on a frame. Have a perfect spring quilt just waiting for these threads, want to try the 12wt for hand embroidery… ohh and I could give them a go on the embroidery machine. I’d love to have be part of the challenge

Siobhan November 21, 2011

Love a challenge! Bring it on ;)

Annabella November 21, 2011

Oh I would love to have a go in the challenge – yes please!!

Cheers

I have never used Aurifill and am curious to try… thanks for the chance and challenge!

siobhan28@btopenworld.com November 21, 2011

I love aurifil, but have only used 50wt so would love to try some of the others.

Sue Blake November 21, 2011

I love using Aurifil, would dearly love to try the thicker cotton weight for some reverse applique perhaps?

Lorri November 21, 2011

I would love to give it a try. Thanks.

Nicky Eglinton November 21, 2011

Bit of a novice at FMQ but practicing lots! Love raw edge applique and handwork. So yes I’m up for a new challenge!

aurifil 50 wt color 2700 is mu go-to thread for piecing – love aurifil thread – and so does my machine !

Ann Beardsley November 21, 2011

I’ve got just the project in mind…want to try a quilt as you go project.

tezzcan@aol.com November 21, 2011

I really am going to have to try aurifil, I’m sure you have enough volunteers for your challenge by now so I’d better to try and find somewhere to buy some.
Great challenge.

Erin November 21, 2011

I’m up for the challenge!

Christina Aiton November 21, 2011

I would love to be a volunteer. These different weights of thread would work beautifully in a new project that I am designing right now – I am very inspired by the paintings of Paul Klee and in the ways he used color so this mix would be a super accent.

Indianna November 21, 2011

I completed a week long machine embroidery course and so I have lots of ideas I need to try out…… Aurifil looks like it will provide the colourful variety I need to play with.

Danielle Aeuckens November 21, 2011

I’d love to take on this challenge!

Tracey Rampling November 21, 2011

I’m all for it!

Susanne November 21, 2011

I would love to participate! Sounds like a lot of creativity!
Susanne

Janet Frank November 21, 2011

I’d love to try out some new weights on a miniature quilt. I have used the 50 wt for piecing….LOVE IT!

patricia November 21, 2011

I love Aurafil thread. I typically use the 40wt for everything. It would be a great challenge to participate in. Thank you for the opportunity and information.

Karen November 21, 2011

Would love to do this challenge as I have not tried Aurifil yet! Fun!

Karon November 21, 2011

Mostly have used 50wt but looking forward to trying others.

Penelope November 21, 2011

I see a small free motion flower, micro-quilted, using varying weights and layering to achieve depth. Will probably add beads.

Christine November 21, 2011

I never used Aurifil but would love to give it a try. I’m planning a family quilt with appliqued “hand prints” – that would look great with the colour range provided :)

Penny G November 21, 2011

I am working on hand quilting for the first time and I love it.

Anne November 21, 2011

It’s an interesting challenge. I’m enjoying using the Aurifil threads that I won from Lynne at Lily’s quilts so I’d love to try the other weights!

Carrie Dunn November 21, 2011

I love using 50wt Aurifil for my piecing, it’s the only thread I use for piecing and I would love a challenge for any of these threads! Looking forward to seeing what is made!

Marianne November 21, 2011

I’ve never used Aurifil but have always wanted to! I’d like to volunteer.

Lori November 21, 2011

I would love to be a part of this challenge. I haven’t tried Auriful threads, but have always wanted to!

Diane Kelsey November 21, 2011

Ready for a new challenge. I bought some aurifil at the Knit & Stitch show and love it. It would be great to work with different types.

Judith November 21, 2011

Most definitely up for the challenge.

Sabrina Diehl November 21, 2011

Kit Lang November 21, 2011

I’m definitely up for this challenge – I’ve been dying to try aurafil thread!

Annette November 21, 2011

I would love the opportunity – always up for a challenge. I have been reading oodles about Aurifil threads and how happy quilters are with the results. How fun it would be to create something using all the thread samples!

lilith514@yahoo.com November 21, 2011

Well, I’d probably do something small in each of the categories. Mini quilt, embroidered clutch, home dec pillow, etc. Would be a lot of fun to try them all out.

I’d definitely be up for it! I’ve never tried Aurifil before, but I sure have wanted to!

JenAC November 21, 2011

I’m just getting my quilt design mojo on. I would love to try out some Aurifil threads on some new ideas!

Wendi Gratz November 21, 2011

Wow! I was just getting ready to work on set of quilted blocks that would use applique, quilting and embroidery with a mix of hand and machine techniques. A sampler pack like this would be delightful to play with!

Judy Symalla November 21, 2011

I think I’d make a small wallhanging sampler that allowed me to sample all the weights. For example I’d us the 12 wt to blanket stitch down an applique. I’d do some machine piecing and hand quilting and embroidery. It would be fun to try. The colors are so vibrant it would probably be a fall theme. I am up to the challenge!

Pam November 21, 2011

I have always used superior. I could not find the right color but in Aurifil so I tried it…I will never use anything else to quilt with. I was surprised there was no breakage I would a challenge to see what the others can do!

Helen Fremin November 21, 2011

I’m up for a challenge!

Elaine Poplin November 21, 2011

Oooooh, pick me! Pick me! I’d challenge myself to use all five cohesively in the same piece. :)

Oooo, I’d love to participate in this challenge! Sounds like fun!

francispaul@planet.nl November 21, 2011

carrie November 21, 2011

I’m up for the challenge! I already have a few ideas.

Patty November 21, 2011

I have been wanting to try some of the heavier weights of Aurifil, this may be my opportunity! I already use the 50 wt and am changing over to all Aurifil. I am even selling off my other threads on Ebay!

Lisa Mather November 21, 2011

Would love to try out this challenge! Thanks for the opportunity!

Brenda November 21, 2011

I’m up for a challenge with my favourite threads!

Patricia November 21, 2011

I would be up for the challenge. I love this thread.

Susan November 21, 2011

I have yet to use aurafil thread, but I’ve been yearning to play with stitches. This could be fun!

Shorella November 21, 2011

I had the chance to try the 28wt for machine quilting and its glow is just georgeous – love it! As they are not easy to get here in Germany i’d loooove soooo to be in the challenge just to try all the others out (and to know then, which ones to order via internet…)!

Kristen November 21, 2011

I would love to give it a try…I love Aurifil…I just recently found it and love it!

Rachel Trindle November 21, 2011

I’m a thread-junkie, and Aurifil is one of my favorites to work with. I’d love to do this challenge. One of my goals for the coming year in quilting is to be more intentional about thread choice in my free motion work — I’ve been experimenting and have more idea of what effect each type of thread will create, but now to factor that in with the entire design process.

MarciaW November 21, 2011

I’ve wanted to work with Aurifil so yes please add me to the challenge.

Lucia November 21, 2011

I am a recent Aurifil convert and I’m up for the challenge. I have only worked with the 40 and 50 weights of Aurifil so far and would love to try the others.

annietwinkletoes@gmail.com November 21, 2011

I love the 50 weight and would be really interested in trying the others. The wool in particular seems very interesting!

Claire Jain November 21, 2011

I’ve got a perfect project in mind for these threads. This would be way fun!

Norma November 21, 2011

have heard so much about these wonderful threads but have yet to try them!

Brenda Joyce Cloud November 21, 2011

had never tried it before but was told all about it until I started going to a quilting 101 class and the instructor suggested we all use Aurafil. I love it and am using the 50 wt.

Linda November 21, 2011

Just this week I tried out 2260 RED on a little Christmas Wall Hanging. It went really well with no problems. This is my 1st try with Aurifil. I’d use it again. I usually use Mettler’s threads.
Thanks for sharing!

Sheila November 21, 2011

I’ve never tried Aurifil, but everyone who uses it raves about it, so I’d love to give it a go!

courtlyons@yahoo.com November 21, 2011

Sounds fun, I’m up for it!

Michaela November 21, 2011

I’ve never used Aurafil before but I would love to be able to figure out how different weights of thread work under different circumstances. I’ve been doing a lot of quilting recently and have yet to figure out what works best for me and love the idea of a design challenge!

Sew Create It - Jane November 21, 2011

I would *love* a chance to play with these threads…please consider me :o ) I’m happy to blog about too :o )

Briana November 21, 2011

I would love to try this challenge! Pick me, please :)

Julianna November 21, 2011

I would love to take part in this challenge!

jmbmommy November 21, 2011

I use mostly 40wt… but I think that experimentation is fun. I have been wanting to make a small whole cloth quilt with quilted words and this could be a great opportunity! Thanks guys!

Rhonda November 21, 2011

No one around here sells Aurafil and I am dying to get my hands on some to try.

Shiree November 21, 2011

now that is a challenge, and what fun that would be. I have not used Aurifil, but have been considering it’s use as so many good things said about it, keen to stock in my shop too.. wouldn’t mind trying out some raw edge applique perhaps.

amy g November 21, 2011

I would love to! Can’t wait to get my hands on that gray thread!!

Kristal November 21, 2011

I use aurifil to piece almost all of my quilts. I would LOVE to play with some of their other products!

Kimberj November 21, 2011

I make large textile paintings with recycled fabric then highly detailed with free motion embroidery to give depth and texture on canvas. Then they are stretched and framed. I would love to try the aurifil to see if its compatible with my process. I use a Janome 6600. I don’t know anyone else who does what I do. Happy to send pics of the process and finished goods.

Kelly Solomon November 21, 2011

I would love to try any of the thread to finish up my holiday gifts which will be hand quilted. Haven’t had a chance to try Aurifil thread yet, but have only heard wonderful things about it! Thanks for the chance to participate!

Sarah@PingsAndNeedles November 21, 2011

Yay! Get you! Challenges! Fabtastic … I’ve used up nearly all the 12wt for topstitching and applique bits … It’s brilliant!

Not entering … just saying how much fun using different weights of thread is … :)

Sel November 21, 2011

This is out of my usual scope, but I think it’s time to start stretching my skills.

I’ll give it a go.

tusen November 21, 2011

I haven’t used Aurifil thread yet, so it would be a great opportunity to try (if the challenge is open internationally)

Susan Avery November 21, 2011

I love your 40 and 50 wt thread and would love to use all of this thread in a rose of sharon quilt that I am working on! Thanks.

Katy (LethargicLass) November 21, 2011

I would be willing to try this challenge. I don’t have a blog though if that’s an issue.

Wyo Di November 22, 2011

Just learning the embroidery feature of my Pfaff Creative Vision, so would love some Aurifil thread to test out!! Thanx.

dkb2@hotmail.com November 22, 2011

I will take the challenge gladly!

kathy November 22, 2011

i have not tried aurifil thread yet, but would love a chance!

Cynthia Sandberg November 22, 2011

I love your threads! I am a quilter-embroidery by hand and by machine! Love to make my own designs in my 5D Embroidery Extra on my Husqvarna Viking embroidery machine! I am into their funky designs and your thicker threads work great – especially 40wt and any of the others I would like to try. Hard to find them here where I live so please choose me so I can show my work off to the local shops and get them to order your thread lines!! Love the feel of the thread too!

Lynn November 22, 2011

I think I used it once. But would love to be a part of the challenge

Lynn November 22, 2011

I used it once, and would love to be a part of the challenge.

Jan May November 22, 2011

I’d love to design something using the Aurifil threads. I keep hearing about them via Twitter (it’s all good!), but I’ve never seen them for sale in my part of the world. Would relish the opportunity to try them out.

Patty November 22, 2011

Count me in. I’d love to be chosen.

Jeannette November 22, 2011

I’d love to help out!

Ruthie November 22, 2011

I think I’ve only used it once to machine quilt. I would love to help with the challenge.

Erica November 22, 2011

I have not ever seen Aurifil in stores so I can only base it on other threads for weights. I do love to topstitch and embroider so from handstitching a pouch to machine quilting a mug rug, topstitching a bag or adding detail to a child’s dress. I can find a use for it!

Sam November 22, 2011

Aurifil has become my fave in the last year… it is delightful and leaves so little fuzz behind! As someone who does a lot of free-motion embroidery, this would be a delight to experiment with!

Tricia November 22, 2011

I would love to participate in this challenge!

Sarah November 22, 2011

Sounds like fun!

Laura November 22, 2011

This sounds awesome. I’ve been wanting to do some creative embroidery/applique!

bigrigquilting@gmail.com November 22, 2011

What fun – so many possibilities for this challenge. I would love to play around with these threads and see what I could come up with.

monda November 22, 2011

I’d love to give these a go. I hear everyone raving about them, so it would be good to see what all the fuss is about!

Jackie W November 23, 2011

Would love to participate!

Kristin M November 23, 2011

I would love to give this a try!

Crunchy Con Mommy November 23, 2011

I’d embroider with it. Perhaps a quilted mug rug with some stylin embroidery on it? Could also be fun to accent felt food with-I love to make felt food for my toddler!

Lynn November 23, 2011

I LOVE aurifil thread. I’d love to try some of the different weights in a project.

Lotti November 23, 2011

Ooh I’d definitely be up for the challenge

Judy November 23, 2011

I have only used 50 wt., love it! Would love to try others!

Jennifer Sanborn November 23, 2011

I’d be up for this challenge- I’ve only used the 50wt, but I love it. Best thread anywhere for piecing and quilting.

cissa kamakura November 23, 2011

I use Aurifil for piecing and hand applique. I am left handed and this thread is one of the few threads that work for us lefties. I also machine quilt with it; and use the 50 w in the bobbin since my machine tension behaves really well when I use it. No matter what weigh I have on my needle.

Pinky November 24, 2011

Ouuuuuu….. I can see these in an appliqued ” Falling Leaves”quilt of Autumn’s finest colors! Perfectly matched~

Liz Ingram November 25, 2011

I would love to try this thread on my longarm.

Toni-Anne November 26, 2011

I have long heard about Aurifil, have tried many other threads and still looking for some thing that is a real joy to sew with. I am most certainly interested in testing these threads and am hoping for that serendipitious moment to finally arrive.

Katie Wiseman November 27, 2011

I can do all the things you mentioned. . . . PLEASE let me try!!!!

Connie Sundberg December 1, 2011

I am most anxious to try Aurifil Thread. I am new to quilting but have sewn for 45 years. I have asked many about bands of quilting thread and the best reviews came from gals using Aurifil 50 weight thread. This week I will begin “Edyta Star’s Farmhouse Quilt” and will need to purchase Aurifil for the first time. I have seen Aurifil Thread Kits to match the colorway used in this quilt and many others. Why would I want to use anything else? Am up to the challenge? Yes!, with great enthusiasm~ Pick Me~ Please… I need lots of Aurifil Thread.
~ Happy Aurifil trails to you. ~

Sunny Hemphill December 2, 2011

I would love to be picked for this challenge. I love Aurifil thread. Looking at the colors of thread already has me thinking of some amazing possibilities.
