Today’s featured designer is Heather Jones, who blogs at Olive & Ollie. Heather is a wonderful quilter and pattern designer who has truly embraced the modern quilting aesthetic — so much so that she was a back-to-back winner in the Modern Quilt Guild‘s Project Modern design challenge contest! Her beautiful quilts were recognized in both Challenge 1 and Challenge 2. Way to go, Heather! With this stellar track record in design challenges, we couldn’t wait to see what Heather would do with one of Basic Grey’s canvas samplers.
–

I received this printed canvas sampler from the Basic Grey collection. I knew right away that I wanted to color in the scrollwork design, so I went with one of my favorite tools: a fine tip Sharpie marker. It took a while, but I think it was well worth the time and effort.

Next, I made fabric yo-yos out of scraps of fabric. I made them in two sizes, since there were two different sizes of printed circles on the canvas.

Then, I sewed two buttons, layered on top of each other, to the center of each yo-yo and tied a knot in the back.

was going to hand sew the yo-yos onto the canvas, but I was afraid there would be too much pulling and tugging on it, so I went with another one of my favorites, Fabri-Tac.

This glue is crazy strong, but it’s also kind of stinky, so be sure to work with it in a ventilated area if possible. You only need a little bit of it, too.

And voila, that’s it!

I want to frame it with a big, black chunky frame, but I haven’t been able to find one that I like yet. I think we might have to make one because of the width of the canvas, so it may take a while until that’s done!

I think this is my favorite so far!
Heather, that looks fun! What a quick zippy project idea. like the play of folor against the “drawn” canvas.
I’ve been wondering when someone would color in the designs!:)
I made a bunch of yo-yo’s this summer and wasn’t sure what to do with them….what an absolutely inspiring idea!! Soooo pretty! Thanks!
