Today we’re very excited to welcome Julie Herman to the Fat Quarterly blog!  Julie is the voice behind the popular Jaybird Quilts blog and is an amazing quilter and pattern designer to boot.  Today, Julie’s answering some of our questions, introducing the Fat Quarterly audience to some of her newest pattern designs, and even offering a few giveaway gifts for some lucky readers.

We hope you enjoy this fun Q&A to help get to know Julie better!

FQ: Congratulations on the release of your new quilt patterns! Can you tell us a bit more about each one?

Thank you! It’s been a busy few months in land of Jaybird Quilts. Since March I have announced 8 new patterns and have one more to reveal before market.

Unwind plays with negative space to create stars in the background. It uses 2 1/2″ strips and is a great design to feature a collection of fabric.

Firecracker is a great quilt to feature some of your favorite fabrics. It requires only a fat eighth of each to create the left and right firecrackers.

Hugs & Kisses is quickly becoming my top selling pattern. The design creates X’s and O’s which is where the name came from. I call this my start crossed lovers quilt. One of the best parts of this pattern is that it looks complicated but is actually very easy to put together.

Fast Forward is bold, fast & fun! I’ve always had a fascination with column quilts and this pattern developed from that. I know that a black background is a bold choice, but for this fabric it was the perfect choice.

Carnival is a twist on a basic pinwheel. It uses pre-cut 10″ squares to create this fun spring quilt of spinning pinwheels.

Plaid Parade is the result of combining plaid and argyle together. It’s a great pattern for large scale prints that you don’t want to cut up into little pieces.

Off the Rail is a modern spin on a traditional favorite. It’s a fat quarter pattern but it would also be a great stash buster.

Chopsticks is my newest pattern & currently my favorite. With the help of a 60° ruler you can perfectly cut all the pieces and make this quilt in a weekend.

…. and one more to come!

Most of my patterns have size options with all of the fabric requirements on the back for easy shopping.

FQ: You’ve got a great sense of fabric and pattern. Can you suggest a few alternative fabric choices for some of your patterns? What new fabric lines do you think would best bring your patterns to life?

I’m attracted to clear, bold, saturated prints. I often call my color style “crayon box” since I prefer to work with those colors over subtle ones.

Patty Young just showed a sneak peek of her new line “Grand Bazaar” and I can see it being a fantastic line of fabric to use for many of my patterns. http://modkidboutique.blogspot.com/

Anything by Momo would also be great.

Solids – I have a version of fast forward started that is in all solids and it’s looking amazing.

With the help of some friends I’ll have a few new samples of my patterns at market in different fabrics to show people the possibilities!

FQ: Speaking of fabric, what are your top 5 favorite prints right now?

Top 5?? I’m supposed to pick just 5?? Well I’m in a green mood today… so here are my 5 favorite greens right now:

ANM-11203-49 Olive by Nancy Mims from Pick A Bunch

APC-10997-43 Leaf by Piece O’ Cake Designs from Treasures and Tidbits

Lizzy House – green pearl bracelet (basra blue 1001 Peeps)

Modern Workshop Courtyard Green Roundabout Dots SKU# 11175-14

EIP-11018-47 Grass from Metro Living

FQ: Congratulations also on having your first booth at Quilt Market later this month in Salt Lake City! Tell us what market visitors can expect from your booth.

Thanks… eek!! It’s so close now! People can expect to see a fun space showcasing my patterns as they have seen them & a few in some new fabric collections. I’m also doing a schoolhouse on Thursday with Joan Hawley {http://www.lazygirldesigns.com/} of Lazy Girl Designs.

3:10 – 3:40
Joan Hawley & Julie Herman
Lazy Angle: Strip Cut Pieces for Perfect Points

FQ: Readers of your blog know that you are an expert user of specialty rulers and notions. (I recently bought 2 specialty rulers based on your great tutorials!) Tell us why you love these notions so much, and what are some of your current favorites?

It isn’t a secret that I love specialty rulers. Not all rulers are worth the price tag, but when I find a ruler that I love I enjoy sharing it with others. A good specialty ruler can significantly cut down your prep time and increase accuracy.

Of course my favorite right now is the Lazy Angle ruler by Joan Hawley. {http://www.lazygirldesigns.com/products/item/Lazy_Angle_Ruler/270/c48}
The ruler has so many possibilities and you can just play for hours!

My #2 ruler right now is the new 12.5″ Creative Grids 60° ruler that I featured in my Chopsticks pattern. I really enjoy using 60° angles to create triangles & hexagons and this new large ruler has so many possibilities!

I know that sometimes people are nervous to buy them or that they don’t fit into that month’s quilt budget. For this purpose I have included full size templates with all of my patterns that use specialty rulers.

FQ: Look into your crystal ball and tell us what you predict will be some of the biggest industry trends at Spring Market this month.

The first trend that I’ve already seen a peek at is Purple. A few designers have already shown sneak peeks of their lines to be released at Market and Purple is back!

Now into my crystal ball… I see lots of beautiful fabric, great tools and amazing quilt patterns. :-)

FQ: What does 2011 and beyond have in store for Jaybird Quilts?

I hope to teach more and continue to develop more patterns. Past that I’m trying to take each day one at a time and see where this road takes me. The last 4 months have been a whirlwind and I’m looking forward to a bit of rest as well!

Thank you FQ for having me!!

And now for the goodies.  I have three amazing prizes for you. Thank you to Robert Kaufman for the fabric and Creative Grids for the rulers!

Prize #1 will get you started with Unwind. It includes the pattern, a roll up of the fabric featured on the cover “Pick a Bunch” by Nancy Mims and a Lazy Angle Ruler.

Prize #2 will get you started with Fast Forward. It includes the pattern, a roll up of the fabric featured on the cover “Treasures & Tidbits” by Piece O’ Cake Designs and a Lazy Angle Ruler.

Prize #3 will get you started with the Lazy Angle Ruler and 5 of my new patterns! The possibilities are endless!

Thanks again, Julie!  Interested in winning one of Julie’s fantastic prizes?  Simply leave a comment on this post letting us know which of Julie’s new patterns is your favorite, and what fabrics you would use to bring that pattern to life.  We’ll leave the giveaway open for almost a week, and will announce our winners next Wednesday, 5/11.  Good luck, and happy sewing!

Lisa May 5, 2011

I love both Carnival and Firecracker – and think that fabrics in my stash would work well for both of them!

Jen W May 5, 2011

I would definately say Hugs and Kisses – It is such a dynamic design and I like the negative spaces within the kisses. I also love unwind and its great that it can be made with strips, but really they are all lovely!

Rhonda Laws May 5, 2011

I really like Firecracker and I would use Honey Child. Thanks for more info on Julie and for the great giveaway.

Sarah Z. May 5, 2011

I like Chopsticks. They’re all gorgeous though! This was a fun post. Thank you!

amy dame May 5, 2011

i just discovered Julie’s work via the Quiltmaker 100 Blocks blog tour, and i fell in love instantly! i can’t decide between my two favourites, my affection is tied between Unwind and Fast Forward.

there are tons of lovely fabrics that they’d both be amazing in, but this past week was the tax deadline here in canada, and i’m on a very strict fabric budget until i recover from the shock, so i think i’d dig into my stash (5 or 6 rubbermaids full) of vintage sheets and make fun cheery versions that won’t affect my bank balance!

Ellen Ban May 5, 2011

I’m really liking Unwind and could see it made up with my Wonderland jelly roll! Great interview and prizes, thanks for the chance to win!

Johanne May 5, 2011

Love the Copsticks, Would look great with some Amy Butler or Kaffe Fassett fabric.

MarianneK May 5, 2011

Hard to pick one, but I do like Hugs and Kisses and would use fabric from my stash to give it a scrappy look. Enjoyed the interview.

Lauren May 5, 2011

I love Unwind and Fast Forward – thanks for the great interview and making me investigate the lazy angle ruler!

Ivona May 5, 2011

I like Plaid Parade, would be nice with Amy Butler or Denyse Schmidt fabrics. Greetings from Slovakia :-)

Jeanie May 5, 2011

I love Unwind and would do it in the same vibrant fabric as shown. Beautiful.

Karen G May 5, 2011

I would love to make chopsticks or off the rail!! Love all of them!

taylor May 5, 2011

I’m loving the triangles in Chopsticks but I think I would have to wait for the new Tula Pink Prince Charming line to come out.

kai273@hawaii.rr.com May 5, 2011

I think my favorite is Chopsticks, but they are all fun-looking patterns. I hope Julie’s right about purple!

Cathy May 5, 2011

My favorite pattern is a toss up between Chopsticks and Carnivale. The fabric would be hard, I might do it in reds or greens. Of course I love the pips and I love Riley Blake. Let me win and I’ll whip it up and send you a pic.

thanks
cathy

Marcia Kosturock May 5, 2011

I love Chopsticks!! LOVE IT! I don’t know what fabric I would use.. I’m more a color girl. I would love to see it with the solid triangles one color like green, and the open triangles aqua.. or the solid triangles yellow and the open triangles pink.. how fun!! So many possibilities with this one :)

Lindsay May 5, 2011

I love Julie’s work! My favorite pattern is Chopsticks. I’m not sure what fabric I’d use yet, but I’m getting pretty excited about Anna Maria Horner’s Loulouthi.

Melissa Corry May 5, 2011

I love Carnival!!! And Chopsticks is a new favorite as well. I would love to use Kate Spain’s new prints (Terrain) that Julie showed a sneak peak of. They are amazing!!!

Mags May 5, 2011

I can hardly pick a favorite pattern. I like the Olive print and I would find a few solids in that color family and make it a focus.

Sally May 5, 2011

For me it’s a tossup between Chopsticks and Unwind! I do love how Julie handles triangles, she led a quiltalong using 60-degree triangles and I’ve had full confidence about them ever since. I could see both of these patterns working well scrappy, but I have a bundle of Morris-style prints that I think Chopsticks would showcase beautifully.

Diana May 5, 2011

I love Chopsticks! Her take on triangles and bold prints against a solid background is stunning! Which 60 degree ruler do you use? I don’t have that many special rulers, maybe Julie or Fatquarterly can do a post on “Must Have” rulers . Thanks for the giveaway!

Judy Blinkenberg May 5, 2011

I too like Chopsticks and would use my Strawberry Fields bundle. Another favorite is Picnic Parade and would use Amy Butler or Kate Spain. Thank you.

Dara May 5, 2011

I LOVE the Plaid Parade pattern. that is really cool. Sort of masculine which is nice because quilts rarely look it. And if you use different fabrics, then it could be for both genders. :)

I love the Lizzy house and grass from metro living. Great picks!

jenny May 5, 2011

I would make Carnival with Me and My Sisters new Amelia fabric line!

amy May 5, 2011

I love unwind, and I’m thinking jewel tone batiks! But all 3 prizes are awesome.

Sarah Johnson May 5, 2011

I like plaid parade. I have 3 boys and am thinking this would be great!

Sarah D. May 5, 2011

Goodness…Unwind or Carnival. I never use one fabric line, as I prefer to mix and match. I’ve been itching to make a black/white/gray/yellow quilt.

Maybe start with Patricia Bravo Fusion in Dim and Lecien My Folklore Wallpaper Blooms in Midnight with Denyse Schmidt Thistle Leaf in Piney Woods with Khristian A Howell Bryant Park Loft Wallpaper in Mustard… Solid charcoal in between. Now I want to make it so badly!

Mama Spark May 5, 2011

I’m currently in love with Chopsticks. I would most likely use my Hope Valley for that one. Thanks!!

Lauren May 5, 2011

I’m making an Unwind right now :) I would want to make a Hugs & Kisses with Momo – It’s a Hoot!

debjeske@frontier.com May 5, 2011

Fantastic patterns! Definitely ‘on my list’ to make! Beautiful – thanks!

LT May 5, 2011

I’m a huge fan of Chopsticks. Maybe using Aviary 2 since it has big scale prints that could showcase well.

Des May 5, 2011

Fast forward is crazy cute!! I would do Amy Butler’s Soul Blossom and a dark grey. yum!

Shanley May 5, 2011

Carnival is my favorite and I’d wait for Kate Spain’s new line to come out!

Tiffany May 5, 2011

Honestly? I like Plaid Parade the best and I LOVE the Ready Set Go fabric Julie used for hers!

Karen May 5, 2011

I have two favourites.
1. Fast Forward with Just Wing It with a navy blue background
2. Chopsticks in Joel Dewberry- Modern Meadow or Aviary 2. His larger scale prints would look awesome as giant triangles.

Kari May 5, 2011

They are all fantastic, but Hugs and Kisses is definitely my favorite. I would make it with my purple scraps, speaking of purple. If I was to pick one jelly roll, I would make it from Tula Pink’s new line. Thanks!

molly::applecyder May 5, 2011

GOOD LUCK AT MARKET, JULIE! You will do great. I am sure. So much talent!!!

Jean May 5, 2011

I love all of the patterns! I also love seeing what Julie has going on her blog on a regular basis.

My right this minute pattern would be the ‘Fast Forward’ as I love the play of the fabrics against the black background. I would be using something from Tula Pink’s line as I am in love with thae different fabrics.

Thank you for the wonderful give away!

molly::applecyder May 5, 2011

(I love fast forward and would try to do it in scraps….)

Pamela V May 5, 2011

I love the Plaid Parade pattern and thinking about the the new Denyse Schmidt fabrics or possibly Aviary 2

Mary Smith May 5, 2011

I just love the Plaid Parade pattern!!

Mary

Alison May 5, 2011

Unwind is my favorite. I’m a big fan of bold colors too.

Laura May 5, 2011

My favorite is the carnival pattern! And central park happens to be my favorite fabric right now so I would leave it in that.

Lynn Karpay May 5, 2011

My favorite pattern right now is Chopsticks but I also love Hugs and Kisses and Off the Rail. I have been enjoying both your blog and Julie’s.

sandy May 5, 2011

They are all so gorgeous. I’m obsessed with pinwheels right now, so Carnival has to my favorite. Firecracker is a close second…. they are definitely on the “patterns to have” list.

gwyneth May 5, 2011

i love fast forward, but i am really intrigued by off the rail. i really want to see what the pattern for that one looks like!

Cameron H May 5, 2011

I want to make Firecracker with Momo’s Just Wing It. I’ve been looking for a reason to buy a fat-eighth bundle of that!

Joanna May 5, 2011

I love the X’s and O’s and the plaid looking argyle-y one :) I think I’d have to shake things up and do them in solids-poseidon colorway perhaps?

Anna May 5, 2011

I am smitten with Chopsticks – and think Central Park would lend well to this pattern. Thanks for the chance to win!

tracy_a May 5, 2011

Chopsticks is so intriguing to me – I recently saw something like it as a pic of an antique quilt (diff colors/look of course) and I had thought – yikes – that’s a lot of triangles! The idea that you could make it in a weekend – wow! So – fabric for this – I think it would go really well with Hideaway for some reason – maybe the peaked roofs? Would have to audition for scale.

Kathie Laposata May 5, 2011

I recently finished Julie’s Firecracker quilt in a twin size for my niece. The Lazy Angle ruler makes this block just so easy! I just purchased Hugs and Kisses. Still, I’d love to win so that I could pass it on to my mom. She is a quilter too. Thanks for the interview. Kathie L in Allentown

Andrea C May 5, 2011

love chopsticks and plaid parade!

Leigh May 5, 2011

They are all so great, but Off the Rail is the one that keeps jumping out at me as a “must make”!!!

Melissa May 5, 2011

I love all of the pattern designs but Firecracker looks like it would be something different for me to try. I’d try some fun Riley Blake prints.

Leona May 5, 2011

I love unwind and Chopsticks! I think I would use unwind to bring my coveted stash of FMF to life!! Thank you so much for the chance to win!!

Audrey May 5, 2011

I love the Unwind pattern! I have a couple of jellyrolls that would be great for this. They are all really neat!

Karen May 5, 2011

I love Hugs and Kisses! But all of your quilts are dynamite! Best to you in Salt Lake!

Ruth May 5, 2011

I love Hugs and Kisses – I’d totally use a big mix of prints for it. :)

cindy May 5, 2011

I just love Hugs and Kisses! I would love to make one for all 6 of my kids and 3 grandbabies. Such a sweet idea.

Dianne May 5, 2011

Carnival is my favorite!

mn2nm May 5, 2011

I love Fast Forward and Hugs and Kisses! I think these patterns are really versatile and one option that I think would be fantastic is batiks.

Cory May 5, 2011

I think Carnival is my favorite, although it is hard to choose. They are all wonderful patterns. I will have to mull over fabrics. There are so many wonderful fabrics coming out that I have quite a few favorites. Thank you for the great give-away. Take care and God bless, Cory

Candace May 5, 2011

Unwind. Hands down.

As to fabric, I would use my scrap bin to bring my version alive.

Marlena May 5, 2011

Carnival with some Denyse Schmidt Hope Valley would be awesome. Thanks for the giveaway!

Shannon F May 5, 2011

I love the unwind pattern. I think it would look fantastic in some remix fabrics. :)

Ann May 5, 2011

My favorite pattern is Fast Forward and I would make it out of Make Life set in brown. Thanks for the chat and the giveaway.

2hippos May 5, 2011

Fast Forward is my favorite.

lisa swinney May 5, 2011

i really love the fast forward the twisting curvy lines that the blocks make is really interesting. I’m not sure what “line” i would use…probably my citrus colors in my stash!

I love Unwind, and think it would look great using a bunch of Metro Living and coordinating solids!

Trudy Lindemann May 5, 2011

Carnival. I think I’d like to use some 30′s repros for that one!

Ann May 5, 2011

What fun and modern patterns. I especiallly love Chopsticks. please enter me in the drawing.

lilith514@yahoo.com May 5, 2011

I love the look of Fast Forward on black. I have a lot of brights in my stash that I’d use.

Thx for the chance to win some good stuff.

Melissa Leonard May 5, 2011

I love the Plaid Parade with any 30′s print would be lovely!! Thanks for the giveaway

Cassondra Bailey-Harig May 5, 2011

I love the unwind pattern! I have some Hello Betty fabric that would look great!

I’m loving the Fast Forward pattern with the black fabric. Great play on negative space!! If i made it I would use a deep purple fabric in place of the black fabric…and then some fun colored fabric from my stash with lots of pinks.

Lindsay May 5, 2011

I’m a huge fan of Julie’s blog and I love her new Chopsticks patterns! I think I’d try out the Pick a Bunch to go with it, since it’s a favorite of hers!

Cherie May 5, 2011

I would love to try the chopsticks. Fabric? Maybe fussy cut Sherbet pips. The plaid parade would be a great baby boy quilt with grey as the main color then a turquoise and orange for splash of color.

Jen May 5, 2011

My favorite patter would have to be Carnival. I love Central Park, so that might have something to do with it. ;)

robin May 5, 2011

I LOVE Chopsticks, and would try it with either Central Park or Gypsy Bandana in Ruby. :)

alegria_a@yahoo.com May 5, 2011

I like Unwind the best, and if I were to make it I’d use a lot of bright jewel colors against a solid gray. :)

Amy R May 5, 2011

Julie’s work is so fun and vibrant – so full of life~ Thanks for spot lighting her and her designs. All the best to Julie at Quilt Market! Have a blast!!!

VBirdsong May 5, 2011

Hugs and Kisses is my immediate favorite. I have a small stash of Aviary that I’d use for it. Beautiful quilts!

annie May 5, 2011

I am intrigued with Chopsticks….and I have some HULLABALOO that is aching to be used. I wish you much success at market. You are such an inspiration!!!!

Amy May 5, 2011

I seriously love them all! Probably most fast forward and chopsticks. I’m also loving the Treasures and Tidbits line!

Licet May 5, 2011

I really like Hugs and Kisses and Chopsticks. I would probably use a Kate Spain fabric or something really vibrant!

Jodi Sellers May 5, 2011

I like Firecracker but Chopsticks is my favorite. It would look great with some FreeBird by MoMo but that is getting hard to find. Some Joel Dewberry would be good to. thanks for the inspiration!

CASharp May 5, 2011

I’m loving Hugs and Kisses. I’m probably over sentimental right now….my baby is about to graduate from high school…but I love the schmaltz that is hidden in this design. I could make it for my big boys and they would never know that they were being buried in Mom’s hugs and kisses.

As to what fabric to use, I’m thinking just about anything would look great. Animal prints or Aunt Gracie, crazy batiks, or solids, they would all look wonderful. You could even build it using nothing but scraps and it would be a stunner.

Carol Chesnut May 5, 2011

Wow! I’m reading all of these comments and so many of us love the same pattern. I love the chopsticks pattern and can think of two quilts that I have to make in the near future that would be perfect with that pattern.

Jamie May 5, 2011

I like the Chopstick pattern the most and I think it would look great in Asian inspired fabric. I also like the Carnival, Firecracker, and Unwind patterns. Too many patterns; too little time.

Kate F. May 5, 2011

Ooo. Tough call. I actually can’t decide whether I love Unwind or Fast Forward more. I really enjoy designs that make smart use of the negative space, so I love Unwind’s stars. But I also studied genetics, and the Fast Forward design reminds me a little bit of a DNA double helix.

Karen Marker May 5, 2011

All your quilt designs are awesome but my favorite is the Plaid quilt. I wouldn’t change the colors they are perfect. Keep up the good work. By the way. I moved to Minnetonka, MN. My hubby got a job here. Still unpacking but I finally have a great sewing room.

Darleen Stanton May 5, 2011

I love your Off the Rail pattern and I have a large fat quarter pack of Sunkissed that I have been looking for a pattern to make good use of it. I love following your blog also Julie.

Ruby McGill May 5, 2011

UNWIND is my favourite pattern – something I need to do, too!

Jansie Martin May 5, 2011

Thew new Chopsticks pattern is so cool! But I am really attracted to the Plaid Parade pattern and would probably use Chrysalis by Moda.

Sarah May 5, 2011

I love, love, love the Carnival pattern! And I would love to make it using the Metro Living line.

Eva May 5, 2011

My favourite is Unwind! I love the negative space and the strippyness! I love the fabric used in the picture, but I could also imagine it in Central Park or in vintage sheet style fabrics.

elena May 5, 2011

All these patterns are fabulous but my favourite one is unwind. I would love to make it with Kaffe fabrics spots mainly :) .

Cheryl May 5, 2011

Julie Herman’s designs are SO much fun and it’s hard to pick – but I really like “Firecracker” -it looks like such a fun way to show off some favorite fabrics. And the lazy angle ruler looks so versatile too – love all the diverse looks Julie gets out of it.

Ladybug May 5, 2011

I love her very latest pattern chopsticks. I think it would look greatin the new Kate Spain line with a black background fabric.

Chris May 5, 2011

Netta May 5, 2011

Love the Unwind. Would head for the scrap bin for the calicos I’ve collected over the years. Great interview. Thanks.

Stef May 5, 2011

I truly enjoy the Unwind quilt pattern or the prize three package as well! I’m not sure exactly which fabrics I’d use, but I enjoy the styles of the Nancy Mim & Lizzy House green tiles that were put up. Perhaps something of that nature. I really enjoy all of Julie’s creations & her sense of style with each assortment of fabrics she chose!

~Michelle~ May 5, 2011

Fast Forward is such a fun pattern!

Katie May 5, 2011

I love Off the Rail! I think it would be a great way to use up some scraps.

Kell May 5, 2011

I would have to say it is Carnival but I love them all! Lol. I would love to make it in Central Park or Terrain by Kate Spain

Wendy May 5, 2011

I love Off the Rail in the beautiful bright colors as shown!

Fara May 5, 2011

It’s hard to pick one, but I think I like Unwind the most. I love it with the pictured fabrics, but guess it will be nice with Dream On as well.

Sandy May 5, 2011

It would have to be Firecracker for sure. That’s my Grand Niece’s nickname and she is a true firecracker. All of Jaybirds fabrics would make this a great quilt. Thanks

Ruthie May 5, 2011

I really love Hugs and Kisses and also Carnival. Can’t decide between them.

Patti May 5, 2011

Love chopsticks and I have some Fandago tat might just do the trick
Patti

delia May 5, 2011

I like Plaid Parade!

Wilma May 5, 2011

I love the “Off the Rails” pattern and the green/orange Piece o’ Cake fabric. However, all the patterns & fabrics are lovely.

The Hungry Crafter May 5, 2011

Nice interview — thanks! I’d love to try Firecracker using Dream On…

Autumn May 5, 2011

I like the unwind and would use Jenean Morrison’s Silent Cinema, because I think the pink, orange and grays would be so different.

Carla May 5, 2011

Love all the patterns but my absolute face is Chopsticks!! I think I’d use some bright & bold Michael Miller prints for it! :)

Stephanie May 5, 2011

“Firecracker” looks really fun; I’d love to make it with bright, large prints paired with a dark purple solid. I also love “Chopsticks”. I sew from stash, and don’t buy collections or precuts, so my fabric choices would be a mishmash of all kinds of gorgeous stuff from various designers.

julie May 5, 2011

Julie’s quilts are fun!

angie May 5, 2011

wow – it’s hard to pick one! I’d say it’s a toss-up between firecracker and carnival. And I think I’d do a Christmas quilt… maybe Flurry by Kate Spain. :)

Carla May 5, 2011

Julie’s patterns are so clever and different, it is hard to choose just one. The new Chopsticks is fascinating, so I’ll choose it today. I’m very excited for the Treasures and Tidbits fabric to arrive on the market!

tusen May 5, 2011

I just can’t decide between Carnival, Chopsticks and Unwind, so it could be Unwind in Countdown to Christmas (it would definitely make a striking Christmas quilt) or Carnival in Kate Spain’s Fandango or Terrain, or Chopsticks in Far Far Away III.

JennE May 5, 2011

Love the Fast Forward in some Soul Blossoms.

duff May 5, 2011

I really lie, the Fast Forward pattern and I don’t think the black is too bold at all–it allows the prints to “hang” in space–love the depth of this pattern! I would use any line that has saturated color or even better, vibrant cool batiks on a black background would be stunning!

Cheri May 5, 2011

I can’t wait to get my hands on “Chopsticks”. I have been snatching up black and white prints with no idea what I was going to do with them. I am interested to see how it would work with this pattern. It is absolutely stunning.

melissa May 5, 2011

I’m lovin’ Chopsticks!

Grace May 5, 2011

I really like the Chopsticks pattern. I like doing something different and unexpected with my projects.

Heather May 5, 2011

rachaeldaisy@hotmail.com May 5, 2011

What a great interview! Julie’s patterns are so clever and fun! If I had to choose I’d say Firecracker and Hugs and Kisses but they are all so stunning! I’ll enjoy watching these pop up over blogland and Flickr in different colourways. Thank you for the fabulous give away!!

Melinda May 5, 2011

Oooh! I love them all but am drawn to Unwind. I would like to incorporate some of Joel Dewberry’s Aviary 2!

wonderful patterns, I like them all especially chopsticks and of course
Crossroads. Pick me!

Manda May 5, 2011

hadley.1@virgin.net May 5, 2011

Chopsticks gets my vote, if I can only choose one…I’ve never tried anything without 4 sides except HSTs! I am currently in love with the Heather Moore’s Cut Out & Keep for Cloud 9; thanks for the chance.

Pam May 5, 2011

I really like Fast Forward and Hugs and Kisses. What a wonderful giveaway to win a pattern and the ruler to make it. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Janet K May 5, 2011

Chopsticks looks amazing – but a little intimidating (triangles). I’m loving Floral and Fauna right now, from Patty Young
Thanks!

Liz M May 5, 2011

I love fast forward – I’d probably use some of my Kaffe Fasset FQ collection – some good strong colours to set off the bold twists!

Kristen Good May 5, 2011

I would LOVE any of these. I just found Jaybird Quilts and I LOVE them!

Melodee cartin May 5, 2011

I follow Jaybird Quilts on a daily basis and fell in love with these new patterns. My favorites are Carnival and FIrecracker, they are all very creative patterns and the fabric too. Thanks for the chance to win some maybe.

Eryn May 5, 2011

I L.O.V.E. that Choptsticks pattern. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I’m glad you posted on Fat Quarterly. I think I just found my new favorite pattern designer. Congrats on your booth at Market.

Darcene Kendall May 5, 2011

Wow, how can you choose just one? I will go with Chopsticks and Strawberry Fields for a soft, romantic look that has a certain edginess to it….

Joelle Lambert May 5, 2011

I do love chopsticks, althought as she introduced her other new patterns, I have loved them all too. See, there is a reason for math!

kat May 5, 2011

I love the Hugs and Kisses pattern. Can see it being made up nicely in Kate Spain’s Terrain fabric.

Angela O. May 5, 2011

I just recently discovered Jaybird Quilts patterns and have been eyeing Unwind for a while, but I think my favorite of her new patterns is probably Chopsticks. I would like to make that quilt using solid black with a bunch of rich jewel tones with subtle patterns. Great interview!

Diana May 5, 2011

I like Chopsticks the best. I don’t even know what fabric I would make it with. I’m currently grounded from even looking at fabric until my latest quilt is finished!

Diane May 5, 2011

Off the Rails and Chopsticks are both so cool! It is hard to choose which one to pick first.

snohpat@yahoo.com May 5, 2011

Firecracker is my favorite. I have some Valori Wells Del Hi, wonder how that will look?

mikehanson@roadrunner.com May 5, 2011

My first pick would be the Carnival pattern and I love Kate Spain’s Terrain. I like to try all of Julie’s patterns and can’t wait to see #9.

Celeste May 5, 2011

Anne May 5, 2011

Love all the patterns, but would love to make chopsticks, it looks wonderful.

Jenny May 6, 2011

carnival is great…good project for my French General.

Amy May 6, 2011

I’d love to try Chopsticks. In brown and robins egg blue

Kelly Rachel May 6, 2011

Oh, they are all so good, it’s hard to pick a favourite! I think I like Carnival the best though. But I’d make any of them really! It’s hard to pick a fabric too! I think I’d try to replicate Julie’s crayon box style with various prints in bold colours. Such fun!

Sandra Davidson May 6, 2011

I love Hugs and Kisses I would use Kaffe fabrics to do it. All of the quilt patterns are beautiful

I LOVE Fast Forward! I really love a black background with some bright fabrics but scrappy is good too.

beth h May 6, 2011

I love off the rails. That would be a great stash buster.

Beth T. May 6, 2011

I love the Chopsticks pattern. It is so elegant in the example, and I can imagine it being done in a very cheery, vibrant way with red, blues, and yellows. If I were making it, I’d use Central Park.

katrina_hertzer2000@yahoo.com May 6, 2011

I really love her chopsticks pattern!

Leslie S. in MN May 6, 2011

The Off the Rail looks very appealing to me. I think I’d like to do it in Sew Cherry or Punctuation. But I’m sure I could round up a mixture from my stash that would whittle it down somewhat.

Jenniffier May 6, 2011

I like chopsticks best and I would use sew cherry by riley blake.

Tracy G May 6, 2011

Enjoyed the Q & A interview. I can’t decide if Firecracker or Hugs & Kisses would be my favorite pattern. I have a collection of Tula Pink Neptune that I’d love to settle on a pattern for or maybe something from the stash. But if I win prize 1 or 2 I won’t have to decide will I.

Heather May 6, 2011

Chopsticks has moved near the top of my list of “quilt project in waiting”. I love it!

    Heather May 6, 2011

I forgot to mention what my fabric choices might be. I’ve been wanting to try a mix of pinks, oranges, yellows, and purples with something other than a white solid.

Justine May 6, 2011

Oooo decisions decisions! I really like the hugs & kisses and I think I may just use my stash of FFA2 for it. It would make a great quilt for my living room sofa!

Gill May 6, 2011

I love Julie’s hugs and kisses pattern
I’d really like to get hold of some sherbert pips yardage to make it!

Viv May 6, 2011

Love the chopsticks pattern. That would be at the top of the list.

wendy May 6, 2011

My favourite is Chopsticks. I’m not sure what fabric I’d use to make it, I like the pallette you’ve used and wonder how it would look in La Petite Ecole.

Christi May 6, 2011

I LOVE fast forward but I want to relish the time it will take to pick the very best fabric! Maybe one of the newest purple fabrics!

Dana May 6, 2011

Firecracker and Id mix my fabric lines using yellows and oranges.

Angie May 6, 2011

Hugs and Kisses!

I have a Make Life jelly roll that is screaming for me to ” Unwind” it!

Dana May 6, 2011

I like the Hugs and Kisses. When Julie was unveiling them one at a time on her blog, I loved the one of the day best. Seeing them all together helped chose a favorite. I would use something from Me and My Sister, bright colors and happy flowers to make it a child’s quilt.

Holly May 6, 2011

Plaid parade is my favorite-I’d make it in some blue and green solids.

Carnival is my favorite — I have some lovely and fun prints from Darlene Zimmerman’s Buttercup line that would look smashing in this quilt.

For me it’s a toss up between Off the Rail and Firecracker, but ask me tomorrow and I might have a different answer! They are all great!

The hugs and kisses pattern is super cute. I’ve been eyeing “Summer House” as a fabric line.

Nita May 6, 2011

I like them all, but Off the Rail is my favourite. It would be beautiful in pastels or 1930s reproduction fabrics. :)

Linda Jared May 6, 2011

It would have to be your UNWIND pattern made from Moda Citrus strips with bright dots on a black background for the star spin. I see one in my
immediate future. I haven’t met any of your patterns I don’t care for so I just keep on cutting and sewing. Trouble is, you are too fast for me to keep up!

I hope that this is the right way to reply for the give-away.
My choice would be Hugs and Kisses in Amelia–just love both that pattern and the fabric.

KimsCraftyApple May 6, 2011

I LOVE so many of these patterns – so unique and creative. I think my favorite would be Fast Forward but it was really hard to decide!

Pam May 6, 2011

I would make chopsticks with Kate Spain’s Terrain

Joy McCalvin May 6, 2011

Wendy D. P. May 6, 2011

Congrats on the new patterns, Julie – they’re gorgeous! I love Off the Rail and Hugs and Kisses!

Sandi Price May 6, 2011

I love FireCracker and Off the Rail. I’m not very savvy about product lines and such, but I am loving bright summery fabrics and colors right now, so probably something that fits that description.

June S May 6, 2011

Fabulous giveaway packages! I love Julie’s blog – she recently helped me motivate to baste and quilt my first real quilt – I’m 1/4 of the way thru the quilting and going strong!!!

I’m picturing the Plaid Parade in either Max & Whiskers or 1001 Peeps!

Lynda May 6, 2011

I think that I would like to do carnival using all solids in very bright vibrant colors. Baticks would be fun as well. What a great giveaway – thank you. So exicted for Julie with her first quilt show booth – what fun!

Tracy May 6, 2011

My favorite is the chopsticks and
I think I’d like to use Joel dewberry
Aviary.

Peggy Aront May 7, 2011

Peggy in NJ

erica K May 7, 2011

Hugs & Kisses has caught my eye more than a few times…I’m going to have to make it! :) Purple has been haunting me lately…It’s not my color but I seem to be putting a lot of it in my stuff. Perhaps I’m just preparing myself for the onslaught!

Great giveaway! :D

shanlowe@me.com May 7, 2011

I LOVE Firecracker and Chopsticks! And I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to win one of these amazing prizes!
I think either of these patterns would be fabulous in the new Denyse Schmidt fabrics!

Mozie May 7, 2011

Love Chopsticks! I’m a math geek and very partial to angles!

Bunny May 7, 2011

Carnival is my favourite pattern. It would look great in Sunkissed by Moda.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Nolita May 7, 2011

That’s easy, Hugs and Kisses grabbed me as soon as I set eyes on it. Maybe in Kate Spain’s Terrain when it comes out. Keepin, my fingers crossed for this one!

Patty May 7, 2011

My favorite is Off The Rail and I’d use Sherbet Pips to make it.

Linda May 7, 2011

I’m such a fan of Julie’s and love all of her designs, but I think my favorite right now is Off The Rail. I think I would use some Riley Blake to make it. I’m not sure which collection. I love all of the bright colors in their fabrics.

Thanks for the chance to win some of her patterns!

Elaine OConnell May 7, 2011

I like the Firecracker best and would use a variety of fat quarters from my stash.

Erin May 7, 2011

Hard to choose, but I really like Unwind for its use of off-kilter negative space. I have a nice orange/red palette built around Patty Young’s Sherbert Sanctuary that could look really great. Great interview!

Cathy May 7, 2011

I love the new Chopstick pattern and I have to have those rulers! Julie’s patterns are the best.

Cindy Rutledge May 7, 2011

Congrats Julie! They are all great. I am smitten with Chopsticks though. I know it’s an older line but would love to use Fandango to make that quilt.

cheri c May 7, 2011

Love the Chopsticks pattern and I just saw “Going Coastal” from Michael Miller… that looks fun and I also think Sherbet Pips would be adorable from Moda. I have been following Julie for a while now and she always impresses!! She is great to share her talents and I have been grateful for the tips she gives.

Karyn Ashley-Smith May 7, 2011

Fast Forward caught my eye. LOVE the black back ground. Would experiment with bold colors or royal colors (purple/green/gold).

Kira May 7, 2011

I love Raspberry Dessert Pattern and the illusion block. I like carnival and chopsticks.

I have no color ideas. I have orange on the pallet, and struggle to think of anything else.

trippywords@hotmail.com May 7, 2011

I love the Hugs and Kisses pattern and I’m really digging Riley Blake’s Sew Cherry fabrics- I think the two would be a great combo!

Ann May 7, 2011

I am torn between hugs and kisses and chopsticks. I have a stash of black/white/yellow prints that I think would be fun for the hugs and kisses pattern.

Bailey May 7, 2011

My favorites are carnival, firecracker and hugs and kisses. I love bright crazy colors and would use them on the quilts.

Yi Yein May 7, 2011

Chopsticks is my favourite but I love the others too! I think Amy Butler’s fabric will be perfect for them.

Debra May 7, 2011

My favorite pattern still has to be Dancefloor!

Margaret May 7, 2011

Think they are all great but love chopsticks and unwind. Thanks for the chance to wn.

Cindy May 7, 2011

I love all of her patterns but I especially love Off The Rail. I love the colors she used in this also- so bright and cheery! What a great giveaway- thanks so much!

Montse May 7, 2011

Chopstiks and firecracker are my favourites and I would use any Tula Pink fabric (love her designs)! Great interview and giveaway!

Jennifer Farris May 7, 2011

hmmmm, those are hard questions. I can see myself making “Chop Sticks” soon in maybe some fabric by Moda.

Melissa May 7, 2011

I like all the designs but I think Chopsticks is my favourite. Love the choice of colors too.

Maria W May 7, 2011

Love the interview, thank you for sharing!

I really like all of your patterns but “Off the rail” has to be my favourite! If I got it I’d probably make it with my scraps, it’s so pretty and looks perfect as a stashbuster! <3

Claire Fisher May 7, 2011

I just love Julie’s patterns and if i had to choose one to make first it could be Carnival and I would select “Pick a bunch” by Nancy Mims to make it with.

Peggy Somers May 7, 2011

I love the chop sticks pattern. It was really hard to pick just one. They are all great. Purple is BACK! Wow that is great. I took a peak at Jessica levitt’s Velvet – Oh I am in Heaven!! The combination would look great on MY bed!

Darlene B May 7, 2011

I recently purchased a 60 degree ruler, so Chopsticks really caught my eye. I would probably use some rich country colors to make this quilt. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

Pamela May 7, 2011

I really like Hugs and Kisses although Chopsticks is right up there too! I would like to make Hugs & Kisses out of colorful batiks. Thanks for the chance to win such great prizes!

Beth Faulkner May 7, 2011

All the patterns are great but I love flowers and Carnival reminds me of big flowers. A close second is Chopsticks. Terrain by Kate Spain looks like beautiful fabric that would be lovely with any pattern.

Ann May 7, 2011

I love the chopsticks pattern. It has so many things I like in a quilt and its versatility seems limitless. Yep it’s my fav altho’ choosing is never easy.

Sharon B May 7, 2011

I’d love to make Chopsticks with Limeade Cherry Fizz. Fast Forward is a close second.

Juli May 7, 2011

I love Firecracker and Carnival. For Firecracker I would use various fabrics in my stash, for Carnival I’d use Aviary.

SuperMom May 7, 2011

Up until she introduced Chopsticks… my favourite was Off the Rail… but now I’d have to say it’s definitely Chopsticks.

Donna May 7, 2011

I just recently discovered Julie and Jaybird when I saw Hugs and Kisses advertised on the SewThankful site. I have been checking out Jaybird Quilts daily since then. I can’t pick a favorite between Hugs & Kisses and Chopsticks. I just finished piecing a baby quilt with Hushabye and think it would be well suited to Hugs & Kisses to make a very huggable, kissable baby quilt. I would like to try Chopsticks in an amish look with Kona bright solids on black, which I think would give a dramatic presentation. Oh gosh, some days I think I’m going to have to retire in order to get all of my ideas pieced and accomplished!

Tammy May 7, 2011

I really love Chopsticks and Carnival. I think they would look really nice in the New Urban Zoologie that is being released next month or the Sugar and Spice line.

LH May 7, 2011

I like “firecracker” the best and would use a mix of greens and blues, and I really want to get my hands on some “2D zoo” fabric to make a quilt for my son, and I think it’d work well with this pattern!

vterp@charter.net May 7, 2011

I just adore ALL of Julie’s quilt patterns. She’s got so many awesome patterns that it is very hard to choose between them. On my list of favs are Unwind, Hugs & Kisses, Fast Forward, and now, Chopsticks. I love every one of them. I think if I was to make one to start with it would have to be Unwind. The fabric I’d use for that won’t be released until September but I’ve seen the sneak peeks and adore that fabric. This fabric I’m talking about is by Kate Spain and her Terrain fabrics. They are just gorgeous and because I love purple they are really on my list of must haves. If I were to make that quilt right now however, I would use fabric I bought already and am waiting for the perfect pattern to use them. Mark Cesarik released Calypso Swing and I fell in love with the colors and design of that fabric immediately and bought it the day I first saw it.

Good luck at Market Julie! I KNOW you will be awesome and have a blast.

Kimberly Nitcher May 7, 2011

I love Hugs and Kisses. I’m planning on make it for my niece for Christmas!

manybooks (Linda) May 7, 2011

I have to pick a favorite?? Yikes! I like them all, but I would probably say Carnival is highest on my radar right now, because I just bought a fun pack of about 12 light but bright batiks that could look really cool in this pattern!

Shannon May 7, 2011

Fast fwd and unwind have me daydreaming of quilting! I have plans to do graduated mono-chromatics colors on each column of unwind with a sky blue bkground—reminiscent of kite tails in the wind! I think it would look great on my little girls bed.

Julie Boldry May 8, 2011

Very fun patterns, but i think Unwind may be my favorite. I love the ruler suggestions, it helps me to be brave to try something new when someone you respect recommends it!

Kate May 8, 2011

They’re all great but I really like Carnival. I have some Central Park that would be perfect!

Gail Opila May 8, 2011

Unwind is my favorite, using Kaufmans Treasures and Tidbits. Would love to try the Lazy Angle ruler.Thanks.

natiel311@gmail.com May 8, 2011

Chopsticks, using some of my Me and My Sister fabrics (not sure which line 8-)

Billie K May 8, 2011

Chopsticks! It’s Chopsticks…..grin.

I really like the new Chopsticks pattern! I would love to try it in black & white with Turquoise/Aqua…I think it would really pop! :)

angeladufresne@gmail.com May 8, 2011

I love the Firecracker pattern! I’d use the new Pick a Bunch line. Those colors would look great with this pattern.

H2Ogirl May 8, 2011

I follow Julie’s blog and I’ve loved seeing these come out. A wonderful paring with Kaufman fabrics oh and a ruler. . YUM

Helen Bridges May 8, 2011

I’d use the chopsticks pattern with my stask of AMH Innocent Crush, and I would keep this one just for myself rather than give away!

Nancy L May 8, 2011

I’d definitely in love with the Chopsticks pattern. Some Amy Butler or Anna Maria Horner fabrics would be gorgeous.

Kathlene May 8, 2011

Fast Forward – Nancy Mims’ Pick-a-Bunch – Tough to choose. All the patterns look like fun projects. Chopsticks would be wonderful with Sherbet Pips. The Lazy Angle ruler is awesome. Thanks for a chance to win.

Pam May 8, 2011

Fast Forward or Chopsticks – I’ve got some bright Bubble Trouble which would look great with Black for either one of these. Thanks for the great giveaway!

Serena May 8, 2011

Definitely Unwind and you know what I love the Pick a Bunch fabric that it’s done with, might have to find me some of that!

Sue Bone May 8, 2011

I have to choose? They all look fabulous. I think I’d try hugs and kisses first to use up some of my scraps in a bright colour way with a black background.

Stephanie C. May 8, 2011

Hmm i love them all! Maybe fast forward?

Jessie May 8, 2011

I like them all but if I had to pick one I think it would be Hugs and Kisses! It would look great in Central Park!

Barbara Ambs May 8, 2011

Oh…all your designs are so cute. I am having a hard time picking just one. I see many of the comments by followers agree. If I have to pick, I think Hugs and Kisses would be great. I am sure I have the right fabric in my stash or I just might have to buy more…

Trudi Rammelkamp May 9, 2011

I really like “Fast Forward”. The fabrics Julie chooses look great so if I didn’t have them, I woud make it in batiks. Thanks for coming up with such a fabulous giveaway!

Jen Barton May 9, 2011

I have a roll of Modern Meadow by Joel Dewberry that has just been waiting for Unwind to come along :) Although to be perfectly honest, that roll would look great in some of the other patterns too!! You have a wonderfully bold style that I find so inspiring right now…keep bringing on the great patterns!!

Mary Benz May 9, 2011

I love ALL the patterns – how am I supposed to choose??? I guess my favorite is Hugs and Kisses. I love a scrappy look and these patterns would be perfect. Thanks for sharing!!

jil May 9, 2011

I am a fan of Julie’s patterns, innovativing in her quilt designs and it is very difficult to choose between the five for each one is fantastic in their own way. I feel drawn to is “Fast Forward” and think Kate Spain’s ‘Terrain’ might provide the rich colourways to do it justice. I’d like to try alternating light and dark values to create a 3D effect, and emphasize the twisting curl.

laurel May 9, 2011

i like the hugs and kisses a lot – i love straight lines, but the illusion of curves is fabulous. what fabric? i’ve been dying to use sherbet pips in something!

Terry Sams May 9, 2011

I love the chop sticks pattern, but all of them are beautiful. I like the central park fabrick but would be happy with any that I could win.

Andra May 9, 2011

I love the Fast Foward pattern and I would probably use Central Park from Kate Spain or I saw the sneak peek of Terrain which is awesome too, but have to wait til Sept for that!! Thanks for the awesome chance!

Paulina May 9, 2011

Hello, I like Chopsticks very much. It’s raelly nice how the prints are joined with a solid fabric. As for the fabric collection – I saw once the Sanctuary line from Michael Miller (aqua and green colors) and love it, so I would combine those two if I had a chance.

Maeve May 9, 2011

I love the pattern “Unwind” and would probably try it first using my stash of Denyse Schmidt fabrics, and then another time using one of Pat Bravo’s fabric lines (I love her designs and the fabric she uses is particularly high quality). All of the patterns are really great but this one is my favorite at this moment. Thanks!

Brittany F. May 9, 2011

LisaT May 9, 2011

I like the Off The Rail Pattern. Im thinking a spot of embroidery in the center block would be awesome. Thanks!

I think Off the Rail is super cute, and might be fun in Dream On. I’ve got a FQ bundle that’s itching to be cut!

Beth May 10, 2011

I like Chopsticks the best. For fabric I would use some fabric that I’ve been saving for something special.

Emma May 10, 2011

Sue Edelman May 10, 2011

Hi Julie!
My favorite is “Firecracker” – and I’d do it from my vast and never ending supply of Christmas fabrics, and call it “Christmas Cracker”. Keep on creating!
Sue

Vicky May 10, 2011

I love your chopsticks pattern!
Anything purple is for me.

Kristen May 11, 2011

I have never used a specialty ruler or a pattern so this giveaway gets me giddy! I would love the chance to try the Unwind pattern with Soul Blossoms… I know it’s kind of an old fabric but it is one I just haven’t been able to get out of my mind, and haven’t had the perfect quilt for… yet!

Khris May 11, 2011

I would LOVE the Fast Forward pattern and I am thinking it would be so cool to use the Suess range of fabrics….thanks for the chance…Khris
