By Hand London – Kickstarter Appeal

byhandlondon

By Hand London is a UK based sewing pattern label and little gang of general making and fabric enthusiasts which are now also moving into print-on-demand fabrics.

They are planning to offer not only a custom printing option (for if you feel up to designing yourself), but also a highly curated gallery of readymade designs (for if you don’t).

The gallery of readymade designs will be created through collaboration with emerging artists, designers and students and by open-to-anyone-and-everyone competitions voted on by our online community. They have already started building up our gallery! You can see their first fabric design from textile designer Eloise Jephson and the fabric design competition they just launched here.

For details of how to help them get started by supporting their Kickstarter fund visit here.

Fat Quarterly Needs You!

We are now looking for submissions for our next two issues.  Zakka, deadline end June and Christmas, deadline end September.  We are also looking for eight volunteers for the Zakka issue’s Designer Challenge, each of whom will be sent seven fat eighths of these cute Retro Bake prints from Makower to make some kind of Zakka – pouches, slippers, eye masks, bags, tea towels, pot holders, tea cosies, tablet cases, cafetiere cosies – etc etc etc.

Screen Shot 2014-03-31 at 09.22.57

If you are interested in either of the above, please email lynne@fatquarterly.com including (i) your proposal; (ii) a photo of something you’ve designed and made in the past – we are looking at design, finish, fabric choices and photography; and (iii) your social media links including blog, instagram etc.  Please put “Fat Quarterly Zakka Proposal”, Fat Quarterly Christmas Proposal” or “Fat Quarterly Designer Challenge” in the heading of your email.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Made from Fat Quarterly

“You had a blog post and asked people what they would do with the jelly roll if they won it. I said I would make this quilt pattern and donate it to the Kalamazoo Autism Center for a fundraiser. Well, long story as to why it took so long, but it is now finished and donated. I combined the jelly roll I won with a Kona solids jelly roll to make this. It is backed and bound with a chartreuse green. Thank you so much for the prize and contribution to the Kalamazoo Autism Center!!!”

Modern Quilt Perspectives by Thomas Knauer

Today I am reviewing Thomas Knauer’s new book, Modern Quilt Perspectives and you will have a chance to win a copy at the end of this post.  I am also thrilled that Thomas is going to be teaching at this year’s Fat Quarterly Retreat in London.

This book is unlike any other quilting book I’ve come across in that Thomas looks to create quilts which are more than just quilts but have a meaning and a significance behind them.  Where I regard myself as a crafter, busy making things that I think look pretty, Thomas comes at the process of making quilts from a completely different perspective.

His quilts talk of what “handmade” means in today’s world, of what make up the building blocks of our modern world, of bringing together different strands of the quilting community, of long distance relationships and even one quilt reflecting the process of cell division.

Whilst I find his process and approach to quilting very interesting and startlingly different to my “let’s make something pretty” approach, the bottom line for me in terms of recommending a quilting book would be whether the projects in the book come under my top two categories of (i) I’d like to make that quilt (high praise); or (ii) I wish I’d designed that quilt (highest praise I can give a quilt).  As long as some of the quilts in a quilting book come into one or both of those categories, I would be very happy to recommend it to others and Thomas’ quilts fall slap bang into those categories.  Each of the ones I’ve chosen a show in this post are ones I want to make or wish I’d made – unusual, fresh, different, striking and even thought provoking.

So I guess I’d give this book a double recommendation.  To those of you, like me, who are looking for fresh innovation and ideas for their modern quilts, this book has that in spades.  And for those of you who would be interested in digging a little deeper and perhaps starting to conceive and design quilts reflecting your interests, views, life experiences and perspectives, I don’t think there is another book out there right now that would give you more insight and inspiration.
If you would like to visit the other stops on the blog tour, they are listed at the end of the post and if you would like to win a copy of the book, leave a comment on this post and a winner will be drawn randomly a week from today.
