Wreally Great Handmade Wreaths

‘Tis the season, and if you spend any time on Pinterest, Instagram, or Flickr, you can’t miss it.  We love seeing all of the personal photos of how quilters around the world are preparing for the holidays by decorating their homes in some pretty wonderful and creative ways.  Today, we pulled together some of our favorite handmade wreaths from Flickr users for this beautiful and inspirational holiday mosaic:

Inspiration can come from so many places — not only from the creations of others, but from the everyday sights, smells, and sounds around us.  That’s why we love this month’s theme: Autumnal Inspiration.  Think crisp, cool air,  shades of orange, brown, and green, and the festive harvest holidays.  We hope you’re inspired by the images above, all pulled from the Fat Quarterly: Community & Inspiration pool on Flickr.

We also wanted to share this beautiful and modern quilt that Amy created using Lizzy Houses’ new collection, Outfoxed.  Not only is Amy’s color palette fitting with our autumnal theme, but her “cracked log cabin” design is both striking and super modern.  We love it!

Thanks to everyone for your kind & generous comments regarding our big book news.  Now that the cat’s out of the bag, it’s going to be extremely difficult waiting for the actual release date.  Since it’s still a ways away, we figured we’d better get back to business.  That, of course, means readying our upcoming issues (no, sillies — just because we have a book coming out doesn’t mean we’re abandoning our e-zine roots!) and continuing to bring you fresh blog content.

Today we’re sharing our September entry in the Inspiration Theme Mosaic series.  Each month, we challenge our readers with a theme and ask that you submit photos of your crafty projects that best fit that theme to the Fat Quarterly Community & Inspiration photo pool on Flickr.  For September, we asked for photos inspired by the back-to-school season, and we combined your submissions with some of our favorites from around the Flickrverse.  Isn’t it a fun mosaic?

For October, we’re going to do something different.  Rather than a theme or a specific color, we’re asking for photos inspired by a certain color combination.  With the beginnings of autumn upon us here on the east coast of the U.S., my mind is already thinking of the crisp, cool fall air and the upcoming harvest holidays.  I’m inspired by shades of orange and brown, and want you to be too.

So send us your photos that best represent this autumnal palette.  It can be anything, from a crafty project to a stack of fabrics to a photograph that you’ve taken in your travels.  Just visit and join our group, and add your photos there.  We can’t wait to see what you submit!

Welcome to the August installment of our Fat Quarterly Inspiration Theme Mosaic series.  Each month, we challenge our readers with a theme and ask that you submit photos of your crafty projects that best fit that theme to the Fat Quarterly Community & Inspiration photo pool on Flickr.  For the past couple of weeks, we’ve been watching as you submitted your favorite photos matching our beachy “Underwater Wonders” theme and — wow! — there were some beauties.

Don’t you just love this mini quilt posted by Julie Gmehlin?  It was made for her by Claire (milliemorgan on Flickr) as part of a mini quilt swap.

We hope you liked this fun summertime theme!  So what’s next?  For many, September signals the start of another school year.  Can you remember the excitement of beginning a new school year?  Reuniting with your friends?  Shopping for new school supplies?  Let’s celebrate the start of the academic year with projects that showcase our many back-to-school icons: pencils, crayons, lunchboxes, looseleaf paper, rulers and — of course — an apple for the teacher!  Let this image of paper-themed fabric be your muse …

Sassy Stripes

Sassy Stripes

Gotta love those stripes!  Each month, we ask our readers to submit pictures to the Fat Quarterly: Community & Inspiration photo pool over on Flickr that follow a given theme.  For the month of June, we asked for pictures that best represent the theme, “Sassy Stripes”.  We loved all of the pictures that everyone submitted.  Keep ‘em coming, folks!

July’s got me thinking about the beach, so let’s do this: throughout the month of July, submit pictures of the projects you’ve made that are reminiscent of the ocean.  I’m thinking mermaids, sand castles, fishies, boats and nautical inspiration, surfers, crashing waves, and anything else that calls the ocean to mind.

Want to see your picture in an upcoming mosaic — maybe even our July one?  Simply visit and join our group, and add your photos there.  We can’t wait to see what you submit!

May Flowers

May Flowers | FQ Inspiration Mosaic

Thanks to everyone who contributed photos for our May Flowers theme. Every month, we like to create an inspirational mosaic around a central theme with pictures from the Fat Quarterly: Community & Inspiration pool. Want to see your photos in future Fat Quarterly mosaics? Simply add them to the pool, and be sure your photos fit the theme.

Our theme for June will be”Sassy Stripes”.  Have you made something where striped fabrics play a starring role?  Or have you used stripes in a new and inventive way?  Maybe the pattern itself creates a striped effect.  In any case, we love to see what you create.  If you have any projects that you think fit the bill, add them to the group and let us know!

If you’re reading this, you have an open invitation to join and submit your pictures to our Community & Inspiration pool. Even if it doesn’t fit under the current theme, we still love seeing what you create and sharing it with all your fellow readers.

Welcome to our monthly dose of inspiration, courtesy of the Fat Quarterly: Community & Inspiration pool over on Flickr. This month we’re celebrating the adage “April showers bring May flowers” with some handmade items celebrating the rains that signal the renewal of Spring.

As you may have guessed, our theme for next month will be the “May flowers” that complement the showers. We all know that floral prints and designs are in great abundance in the quilting and crafting world, so we expect to see many amazing projects. So whether it’s a current project or something from the past, please be sure to submit your photos to be featured in our May mosaic.

If you’re reading this, you have an open invitation to join and submit your pictures to our Community & Inspiration pool. Even if it doesn’t fit under the current theme, we still love seeing what you create and sharing it with all of our readers.

Vibrant Violet

Vibrant Violet

This month, we’ve pulled together some wonderfully inspirational photos from the Fat Quarterly: Community & Inspiration Flickr pool to create our Vibrant Violet mosaic.  Aren’t they beautiful?  Thanks to the talented crafters who submitted their photos for our inspiration mosaic.

WE LOVE showing what you create!  If you haven’t already, swing by the group to see all of the amazing photos.  Better yet, join the group and showcase your creations.  Your photos may show up in a future mosaic here on the blog.

To celebrate the arrival of Spring, our next two mosaics will be themed in honor of the season.  Ever heard the saying, “April showers bring May flowers?”  Our April mosaic will be all about those showers.  Please submit any photos with a rain theme — think raindrops, puddles, umbrellas, and wellies.  Anything in shades of blues and greens will work, too.

Be sure to check back in April for our April Showers mosaic!

Amazing Orange

This was my first time curating the themed inspiration mosaic, and let me tell you — it was tough! The Fat Quarterly Community & Inspiration Flickr group is chock full of wonderful photos. You should swing by for a visit if you haven’t already, bookmark it, and add your favorite photos for the current theme!

Want to get involved? Our next theme is “Vibrant Violet”. Have you made or seen anything that’s pretty in purple? Add it to the group, and it may end up in our March mosaic!
