Whilst John and I were in Salt Lake City for Quilt Market we met Lisa Lam, author of The Bag Making Bible and owner of U-Handbag. Meeting Lisa fueled my determination to try and make a framed purse, which she assured me was just as it said on the box – Easy Peasy.

u-handbag easy peasy purse kit

The kit I ordered contained everything needed to make the purse. I just needed to order glue (which Lisa sells in her shop). The pattern instructions are well laid out and simple with full colour photographs and written with a complete beginner in mind.

Lisa assured me it would take me one hour to put this little purse together, which I have to admit I wasn’t convinced was possible. I’d never made anything remotely similar before, the only bags I’ve made previously are simple totes without interfacing or anything complicated, or simple pouches – either drawstring or zipper closure.

One hour later (plus an extra 15 minutes to allow the glue to dry) and I was done.

It was such an enjoyable experience I ordered a couple more frames and set about making another 2 purses. For these I didn’t use interfacing as I used an echino canvas for one and a sis boom laminate for the other, cutting out the need for a stiffener.

addictive

Now I’m all set for Christmas and birthday gifts. I can see these little purses stuffed full with treats for teachers, friends and family members and at just an hour a go it’s a great last minute gift idea (if, like me, you tend to leave things to the last minute).

Lisa has generously given us one Easy Peasy Purse kit containing full size patterns pieces, full colour instructions with photos, fabrics for purse and lining, interfacing, fleece, the purse frame and purse cord to give away to one of you guys, so you can have a try as well.

Head on over to the U-Handbag shop and have a little look round at the different kits and patterns. Check out Lisa’s tutorials and why not add her blog to your reader? Come back here and let us know what you like in the store or on her blog.

I very much enjoyed the photos of Chez Butler!

VickiT July 3, 2011

I LOVE Lisa’s blog and have been reading it for a few years now. I just love that she’s got so many of the purse frames and the newest one, the Big Gem Clutch Frame is very cool. I still have not taken the plunge to try any of them yet but frequently do look through them. I really like the bronze frame. I also really like the flex frames. Those are awesome and her tutorial to use them as well as the purse frames are excellent. What’s really great about her site is that you can order everything needed to make a purse because she’s got the fabric, the frames, cording(paper), and even the textile glue if needed.

Oh I love the ones you did and thanks for the chance to win a kit. I’ve been eyeing them and like you never made one so a little nervous that I can do it :D

Love the thought of using other fabrics (laminate/canvas). “The Bag Making Bible” is a great book for any sewing level.

I am intimidated by framed purses as well but this really does seem easy! I adore Lisa’s blog and just bought The Bag Making Bible. I’m so picky about purses but I swear I love every pattern she puts out!

The Hungry Crafter July 7, 2011

Very cool! I’m a sucker for kits — I always feel like I’m “cheating,” but I always have so much more fun! Loving the chain purse — very vintage chic.

Oh, I love Lisa Lam’s patterns. Hard to pick just one favourite, really. I would be thrilled to try one of her Easy, Peasy Purses as I’ve never worked with a purse frame.

I really would like to win one like that :) It´s too hot to sew anything here right now, so I just have to admire purses and bags other people have done. Lisa´s book is waiting for winter and darkness :D

I have just my copy of ‘The Bag Making Bible’. I couldn’t help give myself some time out to have a quick flick though. It is a lovely book, nicely laid out and tons of hints and tips. I have been making bags for 10+ years and found each chapter has something new to learn. I found the book almost impossible to put down. Love Lisa’s blog too. :) Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Lisa. :) x

The U-Handbag site offers great items. I purchased The Bag Making Bible & the Baguette Clutch kit, along with other supplies when I decided I wanted to learn to sew handbags. I haven’t made the clutch yet, I think I need to work on my basic sewing skills first. Hoping to make the clutch soon & order more goodies from U-Handbag
