Would you like a challenge? In the next issue of Fat Quarterly, we thought we would celebrate the way modern quilters love to dig out traditional blocks and give them a fresh, new twist. Like this Friendship Block pillow made by Kerry.
So here’s the challenge: go and find a traditional block, maybe design a variation on a traditional block or even design a brand new block that has a traditional feel. Like this pillow made by Katy from the Spring Carnival Block.

Let us know which block you have in mind and give us a rough idea of the fabrics you would make it up in. We will then pick 10 of those to be featured in the next issue of Fat Quarterly. Another example is the Schoenrock Cross block made by Leila.

What we will need from you, by end March, is a photo of the finished block or project (if you make, for example a pillow from the block) and a short “how-to” of how to make it. That could include step by step photos or graphic diagrams but should not be longer than about half a page so not too much detail. And finally how about this pillow made by Tacha.
I would make a cushion using the tippecanoe block – I made one last year (http://www.flickr.com/photos/67474119@N06/8195663008/in/photostream) but I’d love to make another using different fabrics!
I love the Blockade block (but then I love HSTs
) and I would make a cushion using Shelburne Falls or Tsuro but as those aren’t about yet, pehaps some Chicopee or Architextures.
Oh I forgot the fabrics! Texty background with Peacock Lane and Madrona Road
)
hmn.. did my comment go thru?
Apparently not. Typing all again !!
I am going to make a PotHolder Quilt Block – in particular the Henry Pratt block – from Civil War Quilts by Pam Weeks using
the very beloved and gorgeous Heather Ross Nursery Versery prints !!!!!
Definitely FQ worthy !
Great Challenge !

I saw a fabulous ceiling in the chapel at Castle Howard that I thought would make a great EPP design using octagons, squares and elongated hexagons. I have the papers ready to go and will be making it using Chicopee fabrics.
Uhm…not for me right now…but…what pattern is that used by Tacha in the last photo? It’s stunning!!!
I’m designing a bear paw quilt to teach in class next term. It’s a modern version of this traditional block, but you could easily make one of the ‘blocks’ from my design into a cushion for example. I’m planning to make mine scrappy too, cos I love scrappy! I can make up the cushion and send it to you (who do I send it to?). Are scrappy fabrics acceptable? Jxo
I’m currently a little obsessed with designing star blocks, and would love to make something like this in Cuzco or Terrain by Kate Spain: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2wEzU1WeISc/UP8mlFSP_BI/AAAAAAAACsA/taQZk6F9_ks/s1600/IMG_5562.JPG
I’ve been loving Civil War quilts lately. I would do a Civil War inspired block, probably in Lizzie House’s new Constellation fabric with a mix of solids, in gray in blue. I would finish it in a pillow.
This sounds like FUN! Where should we send our photo and “how to”?
I would love to try the traditional “Storm at the sea” with modern fabrics (maybe solids) and in a very small scaling (paper pieced) to work for a pillow.

Let’s see if I can put this in words that make sense…I’m seeing 4 MINI Ohio star blocks set on point then built into a square…everything pieced in pale neutrals (white, cream, alabaster, putty, etc) with just a few splashes of slightly darker neutrals (light grey etc) then punched with just a few randomly placed pops of bright color. I hope that was slightly intelligible:)
I would make basketweave style blocks using mostly Kona solids and construct a baby quilt. It would be improvisationally pieced and would include high contrast with a splash of color.
I would make a table runner using a variation of the buttercup block. I envision using Noteworthy by Sweetwater for Moda. I’m feeling some spring fever already just thinking about it!
A contest that speaks to my heart! Thanks to my recently acquired copy of Barbara Brackman’s “Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns,” this quest to reinvent traditional blocks has turned into somewhat of an obsession.
Case in point: The “new” Star of North Carolina block, barn-sized and full of color (http://www.nohatsinthehouse.com/2013/01/the-new-stars-of-north-carolina.html). For better or worse, three other twists are also currently waiting to be quilted (it’s addicting!)
I’d love to offer instructions for this version (90″ x 90″!) or a smaller, more digestible project
Please let me know what to send (and where to send it!) to be considered for FQ!
I fancy Storm at Sea using Seascapes I love the pattern and with Seascapes, a stormy sea green and white it could be spectacular.
I’d like to do a clashing solids version of cathedral windows. I tried it this way just practicing the block for the first time with solids scraps, and result was interesting, it glowed
