Of course PiPs lost….it was up against Bliss……;o)
I understand this March Madeness thing is supposed to be all in fun. However, some of these designers really have alot invested in their fabrics-not just financially, but emotionally as well. Many of them have blogged about it on their blogs and they are so excited.
With that in mind, I think this whole voting thing brings a negative connotation that is not healthy. It hurts people’s feelings. What makes matters even worse is when people come back and make comments about the results.
I suggest that this be the first, and last, March madness for fabric designs.
Hi Angela! Thanks so much for your note. We always appreciate our readers’ thoughts and concerns about our programs and activities.
While I see your point about the competition aspect of Modern Madness having the potential causing some hurt feelings, I think your argument fails to see the other side of the equation. One of the things we love about Fat Quarterly is the platform to spread the word about designers and fabric lines that we LOVE. Every single one of the 64 fabric lines that we included in Fat Quarterly is fabulous and worthy of more exposure to the crafting community.
We have received a LOT of feedback along the lines of “I’ve never heard of that line, and I’m glad you brought it to my attention. I’m going to check it out!” So from that perspective, we are exposing the designers and fabrics to many who may not have seen or heard of them before. My hope is that designers would be excited by the opportunity to reach new audiences more than hurt by the results of our game.
Voting competitions like this are very common. Every week, people vote on their favorite fabric in Spoonflower’s theme contests. Granted, those people choose to enter that contest. Maybe in the future we ask designers to submit their lines for inclusion in such contests?
More than anything, we just wanted to create an interactive activity that would keep people engaged, talk about fabric, and HAVE FUN. Many don’t follow the *real* March Madness, so this gave them something to follow and get excited about while their friends and family were cheering on the basketball teams. Based on the feedback we’ve received, a LOT of people are having a great time.
But all of this was just *our* rationale for the March Madness activity. I would very much love to hear other readers’ opinions on the matter. If our community (including many designers!) thinks it was in poor taste and that we shouldn’t do such activities again in the future, we would love to know.
Thanks again for your honest feedback — it’s much appreciated!
I would be honestly amazed to find out one of the designers whose fabric was in this competition was actually upset. Yes, they have invested lots and lots of hours of work into their designs, and who honestly likes to lose? No one, but that is life.
Also from a designer’s standpoint, criticism is an equal part in any design process, it can’t all be positive, the good needs to come with the bad.
I think this whole thing was a great idea. Is my favorite fabric still in the running…nope. Oh well, good luck to whoever wins. I think the designers in this competition are just happy to be included in such a large group of truly talented people!
I think it’s all in good fun. when you design for a living people pick your stuff or don’t pick your stuff all the time. that’s part of the gig. I have enjoyed it in a light hearted way.
I wouldn’t take any of the results too seriously, because honestly all of the fabrics have absolutely perfect projects for them and none are suited for everything.
I say keep on. If you shot the designers an email asking, I think it’d be fine. then you’d have all your bases covered.
Modern Madness has been great fun. I too have learned about some cool lines I hadn’t known about before. All of them are already very successful, and I think it is nice even to be included in such a thing. I hope you do this again!
P.S. Who would have thought VCU would be in the Final Four? (I don’t really follow sports, but I do catch headlines.)
I have to admit I didn’t like it. Yes it’s awesome to see or hear about new lines but really it also seemed kind of mean to put fabrics in a competition against each other.
The marketplace does this in a way but to have fabrics some how being more worthy of votes?
Too often we put our stuff out there and it gets judged instead of enjoyed. If you’d asked designers if they wanted in it would be one thing but this pulling of fabrics seemed to me to not in the spirit of creativeness and quilting.
I know it was meant as just fun, and I can see how it was, but I personally don’t like it.
Wow .. I’m surprised by the negative take on March Madness. I saw it as fun and lighthearted and have enjoyed submitting my votes every round but then again it wasn’t my fabric collection being voted against. I hope it is continued next year but maybe with participants who have agreed to be a part of it.
Wah Wah Wah. It’s funny and lighthearted. People make huge deals of nothing. It’s harmless and great publicity for the designer.
Its fun they already compete on a daily basis. I cannot stand basketball but I love this makes me feel like I am one of the sports people out there. They asked me about my bracket who’s to say I am talking about basketball :0)
I have to say i have loved this, but then again i might not have felt the same if i had designed a fabric in the list. But I have seen so many fabric lines on here that i would never have found before, a lot of blogs i would never have seen before and a lot of my choices which did not get through are now safely saved in my RSS feed or favourites with a note to get back and buy some when pay comes through, so it is great free publicity whether or not the fabric goes any further or not. I would like to see something similar carry on next year, i found it great fun.
If we never did anything that might hurt someone’s feelings, we would all be sitting quietly all day – going nowhere, talking to no one – it would never happen.
So I say – onward to the finals!
