Nel is a UK designer for Free Spirit, and a fine artist. Katharine’s Wheel is her next collection – coming soon!
After chatting with Nel we thought it’d be fun to have a more structured designer challenge using the purple and pink colourway of her new fabric and using the theme Katharine Wheel – so let’s have spirals, circles, spinning tops. You know the kind of thing, you lot are all awesome.
Here’s the second part of the deal. Because this is a UK designer, and just for a little change we’re asking for 4 UK based blog readers to take part in the challenge. We will send you a set of FQs, and you create something beautiful using the fabrics sent and the theme ‘Katharine Wheel’
Leave a comment on this post for a chance (until July 1st when we’ll randomly pick 4 people)
UK only – sorry international peeps, promise you’ll get a new challenge opportunity soon!
CLOSED!!! THANK YOU!
Hi,
What a really great opportunity… Pinks and purples are a favourite in my home !!! ( having 4 daughters kind of explains that)
I can see this fabric being used to make beautiful pinwheels as the colours compliment each other so lovely ..
Have a lovely day
Claire x
Wow I love this fabric! I would really enjoy the challenge of making something beautiful to show these off and push myself to try new quilting techniques.

I love Nel Whatmore and would love to come up with something from these wonderful fabrics. I’ve been thinking about a swirly pattern for a cushion, bag or mini quilt for a while and these fabrics would be perfect.
Thank you for such a great opportunity!
eeeep! I would love to have a go
While I’m new to quilting I’ve loved making cushions and quilts I’ve done so far. Using these lovely new fabrics would be a great new challenge, I can already feel those creative juices flowing!
Oooooh so pretty! I would love to have a go at designing something with these
Ooooo those are pretty! I’d love to have a go
these are gorgeous and I would willingly make something lovely to meet the challenge! x
They look fabulous! I’d love the chance to create something swirly with them
I would love to have a go at creating something with those beautiful fabrics.
Gorgeous bright colours! I’d love to have a play with them
I cannot hear the word challenge , drives me crazy because i want to join in the fun
Those are fabulous colours – they’d make such a cool kaleidoscope effect! I’d love to have a go
Ohh, I’m lacking in the pink/purple front and would relish the chance to try to break my p-colour phobia. What a brilliant opportunity to try out some curved quilting patterns too!!
As I said before – perfect purples! I’d go for a New York Beauty block against a navy background to make the colours pop
Ooh sounds kind of scary but fun at the same time. Yes please, I would like a go.
I’d love to play with these beautiful fabric. I’m very into circles right now, so I think I could have fun with the theme
Me me me me me!!!!
It would give me a chance to play with curves and flying geese in EQ7- I’ve not done that yet…
I’d love to have a go at doing something with these – I’m figuring out designs for a circles sampler quilt at the moment and can picture plenty of the designs in these prints…
As a relative beginner I would love to have a chance to design something. I want to show that anyone can make ‘something amazing’ when they have such a fabulous fabric to use. I just love the colours too!
Oooh I love a challenge!!! Please pick me! Me and my new sewing machine would love the chance to have a go at this!!!!
surely you could use a USA participant too??// Would Love the opportunity to showcase such beautiful fiber.
Hi,
I would to sew with these lovely colourful fabric.
Please pick me as I love a challenge.
You can’t go wrong with pink & purple. I can see circles, perhaps pieced or applqued or even both.
Oooh, I’ve been playing with one of the ideas I came up with in the design challenge at FQR and this would be perfect!
I’ve got the paper piecing templates ready to go! I had to sketch them on the train home!
I loved this fabric at market and bought most of the bolts! The perfect amount of floral and whimsy. I always love to design new quilts when the fabrics are so motivational.
Sounds like a lot of fun…I actually don’t have many purple or pink fabrics, so this challenge is perfect.
The theme sounds like fun…after doing some research I’m sure I’ll be able to take on the challenge =D
I am from the UK, but am currently living in Belgium. Please could that count? It sounds such fun.
Well, you have to be in it to win it and just thinking about what to say I came up with a potential design, so please excuse me while I get it onto paper before it runs away again!
So I went and had a look at some of the fabrics on her website and got very excited. This looks like fabrics that are my current style and my mind is racing with ideas of items to make. I’d absolutely love the chance to show this fabric at it’s best. Now, I’m gonna hold thumbs.
I’d love to have the opportunity to create something with this lovely fabric.
These are so pretty, with 2 daughters, purple and pink are adored in our household. I would LOVE to make something on a Katherine wheel theme with these. Thank you for the opportunity!
Wow what a fantastic oportunity! I have 3 boys so rarely buy pink or purple fabric but would love to have a go with these!.
Thank you.
A flood that engulfed my house in January 2010 destroyed over 100 “From Pink to Purple and Back” quilts [and photos and computers, etc.] made by several women from both sides of my family, and 200+ meters of stash all of which were to have some pink or purple. So I am starting over again.
So say that I would be grateful to tears for a chance to start over by participating in this unique creative opportunity is an understatement! I might start believing in miracles again!
Would love the opportunity to do this, may even get rid of the grey and gloom of the London weather, if nothing else in my home!
