PRIVACY POLICY
Fatquarterly is committed to respecting your online privacy. We have established this policy so that you can understand the care with which we intend to treat your personal information. We allow you to “opt out” of providing us with certain information. However, choosing to share information with us will help make your experience at Fatquarterly more pleasant and beneficial for you, and will help us continue to provide outstanding content and service.

Most of the information we collect on our website is aggregated to track general patterns, such as browser and platform usage and overall traffic patterns. We use name, address, and e-mail information primarily to deliver items you request, such as magazines or e-mail newsletters. We may also use your e-mail address to remind you to renew your subscription, notify you about new products or upcoming events, or send you donation appeals and sponsored messages with offers from select other organizations. You may always opt out of receiving these communications.

Fatquarterly online and our e-mail communications may contain links to other sites, including those produced by other organizations. Fatquarterlyis not responsible for the privacy practices or the contents of any outside sites not under the control of Fatquarterly.

The following privacy policy governs the use of your personally identifiable data submitted to Fatquarterly

You can access and post comments on Fatquarterly without having an account and without submitting personally identifiable information. However, some features of the site may be available only if you register with Fatquarterly or subscribe to our e-mail communications.

Collection and Use of Personally Identifiable Information
Fatquarterly collects certain personally identifiable information if you register with Fatquarterly, subscribe to our magazine and/or e-mail newsletters or other communications from us. Specifically, we may collect the following personal information: your name, e-mail address, street address, organization, telephone number, and additional demographic data.

Except as noted, Fatquarterly does not rent, sell, or share your personally identifiable information with third parties without your express permission. We use the personally identifiable information to send you information or material for which you have subscribed or which we think you will enjoy or benefit. We also use the personally identifiable information to assess and improve our services. We may allow entities assisting Fatquarterly on technical and internal issues to access certain personally identifiable information data on a need-to-know basis, subject to confidentiality protections. We reserve the right to provide any successor in interest with our subscriber and user database, and to comply with court orders or other legal obligations.

Fatquarterly allows you to submit and post comments and to recommend comments posted by others (collectively “User Content”). User Content that you submit to Fatquarterly or post on the site, including any personal information included in your User Content, becomes publicly available and can be seen, collected, and used by others. Fatquarterly may also allow you to send e-mail messages to other users. While the content of such messages will not be publicly displayed on the site, Fatquarterly has no ability to control how the content of messages sent to other users is used or disseminated. You should assume that anything you put into an e-mail message to another user may become public. We collect the IP address of our visitors and use that data to gather broad demographic information about our visitors. We also may use cookies to enhance your experience with our website. “Cookies” are small files downloaded to your hard drive that enable your browser to save and recall information. We may use this data to tailor our visitors’ experiences, showing them content that we think they might be interested in, and displaying the content according to their preferences. We may share this demographic information on an aggregate basis without providing any personally identifiable information.

Information use by advertisers and others
Fatquarterly includes advertisements placed by advertisers or ad networks. These companies may use technology to deliver advertisements you see on the Site directly to your browser. In doing so, they automatically receive your IP address. Companies that place advertising on the Site also have the ability to use cookies or Web beacons to collect information, such as your “click stream” (your viewing and/or purchasing behavior) and information about your usage of the Site. We do not control the processes that advertisers use to collection information. However, cookies and Web beacons alone generally cannot be used to identify individuals, only computers. Therefore, advertisers generally will not know who you are unless you provide additional information to them, by responding to an advertisement, by entering into an agreement with an advertiser, or by some other means.

Some advertisers may use behavior- or interest-based advertising: Online Behavioral Advertising (OBA) is any process used whereby data are collected across multiple web domains owned or operated by different entities to categorize likely consumer interest segments for use in advertising online. In different terms, OBA uses information collected across multiple websites that you visit in order to predict your preferences and to show you ads that are most likely to be of interest to you. You may opt-out of this form of advertising by networks that are members of the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) by visiting this site:

http://www.networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.asp

The Site may also contain links to sponsor, advertiser, or other third-party websites that are not owned or controlled by Fatquarterly. We have no control over, and we assume no responsibility for, the conduct, practices, or privacy policies of others. You should review the privacy policies of the companies who operate those websites.

We may also use that information to send you occasional messages about our projects or ways that you can support Fatquarterly. If you do not wish to receive such communications, these electronic messages to you will provide you with the opportunity to opt out of receiving similar messages in the future.

Promotions and surveys

From time to time, we may sponsor promotions, contests, surveys, or other events which require the collection, processing, and storage of individual contact information (e.g., name and mailing or e-mail address) and demographic information (e.g., your age and state of residence) to be used for the event. We may cosponsor these events with other organizations. In that case, your individual contact and demographic information may be shared with other sponsors. Demographic information may be compiled and reported or shared in the aggregate with others, but no personal details that can be linked to specific individuals will be provided. We will not release personally identifiable contact or demographic information to any third party other than named sponsors without your consent (except as provided in Collection and Use of Personally Identifiable Information).

We request that cosponsors uphold the privacy of your information by not distributing or sharing such information with any other businesses or organizations. However, we do not control the information practices of others, and cannot guarantee that they will not disclose your information. You should review the privacy policy of any cosponsor before participating in an event, promotion or survey.

These precautions help but cannot insure the protection of your data from loss, misuse, unauthorized access or disclosure, alteration, or destruction. Please see “DISCLAIMERS AND LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY” above.
