It’s always great to see what the large fabric companies are doing during Quilt Market, but sometimes the true treasures of market can be found walking up and down the seemingly endless rows of the show floor. Here, shop owners, independent businesspeople, aspiring designers, and inventors set up booths in order to share their new products, their ideas, their vision and their inspiration with all of the show’s attendees. Here is where you can meet some of the most interesting people that Quilt Market has to offer.

And here on the show floor is where Katy and I first met Brigitte Heitland, the owner and creative visionary behind Zen Chic. Zen Chic is new pattern company that truly embraces the “modern” part of modern quilting. Through her design, Brigitte aspires to achieve a very contemporary, pure style that fits well in a modern interior with colors and design that complement wood, furniture, walls and floors. In addition to her sewing and quilting patterns, Brigitte has expanded the Zen Chic brand into textile design with her own line of digitally printed fabric.
I happen to know that Brigitte, with her fresh and contemporary take on quilts — not to mention her gorgeous, award-winning booth — won over many fans in Salt Lake City.

In addition to running Zen Chic, Brigitte is a prolific blogger that can be found at Farbstoff. Brigitte’s blog is an absolute delight, chock full of gorgeous eye candy, great free project tutorials, and activities like modern quilt-alongs.

We wanted our readers to get to know Brigitte and learn about Zen Chic as well, so we invited her to be our guest here on the Fat Quarterly blog. Not only did she agree, but she brought along some goodies to share with some lucky readers. Learn more about our Zen Chic giveaway at the end of this post.
In the meantime, sit back and enjoy hearing from Brigitte herself!

“I was born in Germany’s Black forest region and grew up with three siblings. We were a funny gang and loved spending time with our grandma who sewed a lot of clothes for us children. I always sat down next to her old PFAFF and felt so comfortable. She once told me: “When you are tall enough to get your feet down to the pedal, I’ll teach how to sew too.” Maybe this was the best thing anyone could ever give to me. I started sewing at the age of six and I hope I can keep sewing until I die
. Of course as a German girl I had never heard about quilting. I just sewed my own clothes and loved to have unique things to wear.

“When it was time to decide which profession or area of study to choose, it had to be something creative and I decided on Interior Design. But more and more I was drawn to all the students in the classroom next to mine who were working with needles and thread, and so I ended up as a student of Textile Design. Yet – I was a rebel, had a fight with my professor and left high school without a diploma. I became mother of three wonderful children who fill my life with their laughter, adventures and individuality and life lead me another path. I took care for the income and worked for years as an accountant. Many of my friends wondered how I, as an artist, could do such a “boring job”

“Then one day, about seven years ago, while browsing in a bookstore, I happened to stumble on a book with photos of wonderful quilts. I was hooked at once. I had to try it myself and got hopelessly addicted to patchwork. Of course there are always a lot of projects I work on simultaneously (as every quilter does). So I needed fabrics, lots and lots of different fabrics to dive in. And so it came that I could no longer keep myself from starting my own little online quilting shop (and this means I can take pieces of fabrics at any time right here in my house – what a feeling!) Besides I’m also running my own longarm quilting business, blogging about modern quilting, and sewing quilt samples for European magazines.

“It’s inevitable: as a trained Textile Designer I had to create my own line of fabrics sooner or later. And so I did, which led me full circle back to my roots of Interior Design. When developing a fabric or even the design for a quilt, the entire impression of a room comes to my mind. I see the light, the furniture, the color concept, and the style.

“The resulting quilt is a natural element of this scene, fitting in harmoniously. I like clarity in a room, an environment of simplicity where you are surrounded by only the things you really need and love, where you can relax, find your inner peace and balance. So my quilts have a kind of minimal, pure and clear style. They show just enough color and pattern to catch your eye and let it rest there for a while.

“I started my own product line, ZEN CHIC, and had my debut as pattern and fabric designer at Quilt Market Salt Lake City – and what a warm welcome I got.”
![]()
Zen Chic sure did receive a warm welcome at Quilt Market, judging from the buzz on the show floor — especially among the modern quilting contingent! — and the booth award that Zen Chic won at the show. We here at FQHQ foresee big things for Zen Chic. It’s one to watch, for sure.

So how about that giveaway we promised? Brigitte has generously offered to award two lucky Fat Quarterly readers each with a Double Mini Fabric Pack of the Zen Chic fabric line! Each pack contains a selection of large scraps (close to fat eighth size) of Brigitte’s designs, perfect for use in your own projects or to make a quilt from a Zen Chic pattern: the pieces included are large enough to sew all patterns except for the Juggling Summer and Orange Brick patterns (which require larger cuts).

How to win? Simply leave a comment on this post (one comment per reader, please) and let us know what you think of Zen Chic. Had you heard of the brand before? Does it provide a good match for your personal style? Which of Brigitte’s quilt patterns is your favorite? And how about that booth — stunning, huh? We’re not looking for anything too specific here — we just want to hear what you think!
We’ll randomly select 2 winners next Friday, August 19th. Good luck!
** NOTE: Giveaway is now closed. Thanks for your entries! **
I haven’t heard of Zen Chic until now. Love the contemporary look and the color choices for the quilts above. I especially love the Orange Brick and the Puzzle Box Quilt designs, so refreshing!
Thanks for this feature–I have never heard of Zen Chic, but I’m headed over to subscribe to her blog. My favorite is definitely the White Labriynth quilt! What a stunner.
Love it, especially the orange circle quilt! Fantastic booth! Disappointed, though, that her online shop could not be translated to English
Thanks for introducing such an original designer! I love the hits of deep orange – it almost acts as a neutral in her quilts. Very inspiring.
Thanks for the introduction of this wonderful designer! I’m an Orange lover, so the circle quilt is one of my favourites!
I love the bag and the Plus Quilt (a design by Zen??).
I also love the quilt with the many many circles!
never heard of it, but i love the look of the colors and fabric!!
Thank you for introducing me to Zen Chic! I love the contemporary freshness of their designs and appreciate the opportunity to win a little taste! I especially love the log cabin-like quilt in their Market booth and the quilt of circles on squares.
I LOVE Zen Chic! I have two of her quilting patterns and fabrics here ready to go. I got my hands on some Fat Eights of the fabrics in Etsy.
I can’t wait for more yardage to appear.
I have seen the super bag patterns in blogland before but not heard the full background, thank you. I love the + quilt, I need to make one!
I love Zen Chic’s style. I first heard about them in several Market posts. Thank you for the chance to learn more about them. I would love to win these fabrics. I really like Orange Bricks and will be looking for the pattern. Take care and God bless, Cory
I started reading Brigitte’s blog as soon as I saw photos of her market booth. She has a great feature where she creates a color scheme based on a photo, and then she finds modern fabrics to turn the scheme into a quilt. Inspiring! I wish her great luck in her quilting ventures.
Love the Orange Brick. The color palettes are all inspiring.
Never heard of her before, but her stuff is pretty neat. I like the stained-glass effect on the orange quilt posted here!
I have never heard of Zen Chic, but I am glad I do now! I love the spareness of the patterns. Over the years I have seen enough quilts with one block sewn over and over.
This is truly Zen. It rests the eyes.
I saw these during the quilt market round up posts… gorgeous styling. I’m honestly a fan of all of them.
I hadn’t heard of Zen Chic, before now and had no idea what I was missing! I love Brigitte’s style – clean, simple and modern, with gorgeous saturated colour. Just stunning.
Thanks so much for bringing her to my attention. I’m off to check out the links you provided on her.
Gorgeous! I love the clean, fresh look of Zen Chic. I have never heard of it before, but would love to win. Thanks!
Can’t wait to see more from Zen Chic!
I have never heard of Zen Chic before but she makes some beautiful things! I really like the zippered bag at the lower portion of the screen. I am more of atraditional quilter but I really love the simplicity of these designs!
My husband is German (100% born and raised) and I have a MA in German Literature so its neat to hear about someone from one of my favorite countries and their introduction to quilting.
Even if Brigitte wasn’t German, I’d still love her & her work! The colors, the style, the patterns, everything is fantastic! I’ve only been sewing for a year and I love hearing the thought processes of more seasoned quilters… seeing how they create and develop their own individual style.
My favorite pattern shown on this post is the orange tiles… that caught my eye the second I opened the blog post – its lovely and so interesting without being super complicated. Something I’d like to take a stab at one day myself …. less of the fun “moda bakeshop” type of quilts and more of the modern – individualized – minimalistic type of quilting.
Had not heard of Zen Chic until your post. Thanks for the introduction! Love her work. It’s fresh, modern & inspiring!
her style fits me like a glove! heading over to her blog now to check it out!
I had never heard of Zen Chic but I love those quilts!!
I’ve read a lot about Zen Chic in quilt market recaps, but this was more photos than I have previously seen, so thank you for that! I love every single quilt I see here & the bag is spectacular, too. I’m going to her blog right now!!!

I had seen Zen Chic’s fabric line but hadn’t read anything about Brigette – love her fabric and style! Also very cool to learn that she is from the region of Germany that I am currently living in!
It looks strongly European with the colours and the graphic style. HAven’t heard of it or Brigitte before. I like the boldness and simple symmetry of her designs. I love the neutrals quilt hanging up on the wall with the splashes of orange
I had never heard of Zen Chic but WOW it lokks to be right up my alley.LOVED the White labrynth and the Orange Brick quilts.
I love it all – can’t wait to see more!!!
I have not heard of Zen Chic before, but I can certainly see how this is a modern quilting company to watch! I like the interplay of positive and negative space in some of the projects.
This is the first I’ve seen of Zen Chic — love it! A unique voice in the fabric design world, for sure — looking forward to seeing more!
I think my favorite is the white labyrinth quilt!
This looks awesome! I love to see new, fresh ideas, and I love the beautiful almost sparseness of some of these quilts. Thanks for this feature.
…runs off to check out the site.
I hadn’t heard of Zen Chic, but an definitely impressed. I am a fan of circles – and the fabric that looks like wheels with spokes is great. In keeping with the circle theme, I like the circle within circle with circle quilt. Thanks for the information on the designer and the giveaway. Kathie L in Allentown
Oooh, love Zen Chic! Hadn’t heard of it before but have favourited her blog into my Reader and will be trying out some of those tutorials! Thanks for sharing a great find! I love that Swiss Bag and I also love that grey City Scapes quilt… it’s hard to find a good quilt pattern for teen boy and that’s a great one!
I, too, am new to Zen Chic. Thanks for the introduction. The contemporary look is so appealing. I have a few favourites … Orange Brick, the Orange Circles and the Crosses Quilt at the bottom of your post.
I have to say I found their website frustrating to navigate and I was, ultimately, unsuccessful at exploring it the way I imagine I should be able to. Bummer. I hope you will pass this on to them as a constructive comment.
I think the Quilt Market booth is lovely! I like the projects that are mostly monochromatic with a splash of color. j-j-s AT juno DOT com
I had not heard of Zen Chic before, but I absolutely LOVE it! It is so my style. I like her puzzle quilt along. The colors are just so vibrant. It all makes me smile
The photos of the ZenChic booth that I saw on flickr right after Quilt Market were my absolute favourite. “Who is this Chic?” I thought. Thank you for the wonderful introduction. I just love the large modified log cabin quilt hanging on the right hand side of the booth. I have favorited several quilts with a similar vibe on Flickr and will make one soon, I hope!!! Maybe I’ll even get to incorporate some of Brigitte’s amazing fabric!
By the way, the one mustard cross in Brigitte’s otherwise red and aqua cross quilt is more than marvelous.
I enjoyed learning about Zen Chic… I was not previously familiar with Brigitte’s work. The fabrics on her website are amazing!
Thanks for a great feature. Brigitte, you are quite an inspiration! Your designs are simultaneously striking and soothing. Thanks for sharing your story!
This is my first introduction to Zen Chic and her booth is stunning. My favorite is the cross quilt — the last quilt photo on this post. I’ve wanted to make one, and her fabric placement is the prettiest I’ve seen. Please enter me into the draw!
Never heard of it so thankyou for introducing it to me as I have Oooooed and Ahhhhhed at every picture on this post, its bright but not garish, its calm but not boring, it seems to acheive a really welcome balance and Id love to know more, please count me in to the draw, I’m very keen to join her blog too
I hadn’t heard of Zen Chic before. I love the Geometric simplicity of her work. All the quits are stunning but the quilt of orange circles is the standout for me!
Wow!! Brigitte’s work certainly is chic! So stylish and gorgeous to boot!
I’ve seen some pics of Zen Chic before but can’t remember where. I do remember how much I loved their style! I’m off to check out their blog right now. Thanks for the giveaway and for the introduction.

I have not heard of Zen Chic but i love the designs and pure colors and especially the orange circle quilt.
Wow – no I hadn’t heard of Zen Chic before and I’ve obviously been missing out! Love love love the designs and colours and ideas behind everything. I recently made a pillow cover that is very similar to that last blue quilt with the big plusses, so I know she’s on the same wavelength as me – off to check out her blog!
I heard about Zen Chic through some of the Quilt Market coverage. I did not see her blog at that point though. Now I’ve got another blog to read!
I first heard of Zen Chic on Alissa’s blog right after market and have been following her blog ever since. I love her style! My favorite quilts are the white with the squares and the black with the circles. Also love her fabric too!
Thanks for featuring Brigitte!
I stumbled on Brigitte’s blog a short time ago. It’s such an inspiration! I love the clean, yet subtle, and modern look of her designs. Couldn’t say which one I love best.
Maybe it’s no coincidence I feel attracted to “European” style, since I am German myself. Like Brigitte coming from the Black Forest region – how cool is that?
I’ve seen Zen Chic before – I think I linked in from another blog. I love the simplicity of their designs – so uncluttered but the colours so stark and strong!
Beautiful stuff!
I only came across Brigettes blog the other day – such amazing and unique designs!

Never heard of Zen Chic, but thank you for introducing me! I love the orange brick pattern! This is totally my style.
I’d never heard of Zen Chic before, but I love her style! I’ve made a cross quilt AND one like her boxy window quilt.
Zen Chic is new to me and I love it! The strong colors, especially the orange, make it very appealing. Thanks for showing and sharing!
I hadn’t heard of Zen Chic before today but I like what I see. I think I will be subscribing to her blog!
Love Stony Snippets! So original! I would buy that pattern in a heartbeat.
I had not heard of them before this post either. I have been thinking of doing a plus quilt similar to the one pictured.

Susanne
I can’t say I’ve heard of Zen Chic but I like what I’m seeing! Love the booth. And love that cute bag with the crosses, I’m off to try and buy a copy online!
I am in LOVE! Thank you FQHQ for introducing me to Zen Chic these patterns are beautiful and simple.
Yes, I have heard of Zen Chic. They are very fresh and contemporary looking which I like!
Gorgeous booth. I want to make all the quilts, but really am drawn to the Orange Brick design. It is so simple and yet so peaceful to look at.
I have heard of Zen Chic but I was happy to read the article and learn even more. Her booth at market was gorgeous. I love the plus quilt and the orange brick quilt. Beautiful and simply gorgeous!
Beautiful! I love that orange circle quilt. Just gorgeous!
This was my intro to Zen Chic. Love the colors in the booth. I want that half log cabin quilt on the wall. I’ve added her blog to my must read list, and saved the quilt along pattern. Thanks for the giveaway.
There’s a zigzaggy pillow in her web site patterns that is cool, but it is hard to decide. Pretty neat fabrics and patterns. Thumbs up!
This is the first time I have heard of Zen Chic. I did check out the blog and signed up for it. I like the orange target quilt, very striking design and colors.
Haven’t seen Her patterns or fabric but I’m in L O V E !
What an inspiring woman! I have always been moved by amazing quiltwork, and I finally took the plunge and started sewing at the age of 36 – if not now, when . . . It’s just been a month now, but I’m absolutely addicted. I can’t wait to try one of her patterns. Her quilts are absolutely georgeous! Can I move into the booth now, please?
I have never heard of the line, Zen Chic, but I think that Brigette is an amazingly talented person. Everything shown here is beautiful! Lots of luck. I will sign up for her blog
Wow! Thank you for featuring this designer. What stunning work! I love the quilt over the sofa and the one behind the sofa, and that bag with the little cross blocks-how great is that? I’m going over to visit the blog now!
Thanks again, FQ!
Wow! I lost my quilting mojo a while ago but I’m getting back into it (whew, I was worried it was gone forever) and Zen Chic is certainly inspiring!! I love the clean, modern lines that matches my style nowadays. The colours are gorgeous. I can’t wait to check out her blog.
Im blown away by these quilts! I’ve not heard of the name before, but will bookmark it now — these are definitely the kind of pieces I aspire to make, and her color choices are fantastic!
Zen Chic is new to me this week. I love everything I’ve seen, but especially the Orange Brick and White Labyrinth patterns. I’m excited to spend some time reading Brigitte’s blog!
I’ve never heard of Zen Chic before, but am excited to see this new fabric line in person!
I have seen Zen Chic on other websites and really liked the clean simple patterns. Quilts, sometimes between the fabric and the design, are a bit too busy for me. Zen Chic quilts are more artsy and they do appeal to me.
I hadn’t heard of Zen Chic before, thank you for introducing me! I love the orange accents.
wow, I had not heard of Zen Chic before, but I love the almost ‘minimalist’ style of the quilts you’ve shown here. Minimalism is not usually a word I associate with quilting, but here it works brilliantly, and I shall be both keeping an eye out for Zen Chic before, and trying to incorporate some of the ideas into my own sewing.
THanks for introducing Brigitte to the wider quilting world – definitely those of us unfortunate enough not to make it to Salt Lake City’s quilt show.
Stunning! The ZEN Chic style is amazing! And that orange quilt!! Yum!
Zen Chic is new to me, but having been born in Germany I feel a kinship already! I have a love affair with circles so the “target” quilt is my favourite
I love the boldness of her color & designs.
ZENCHIC is so fresh, clean and modern, I love it and wish Bridgette all the best for the future. I am sure we will see lots more of her work.
Love the booth photo – which in fact got me here in the first place. Had not heard of Zen Chic before, but her style is fantastic. Thank you!
I love Bridgett’s designs and choice of colors.. but I never heard of Zen Chic before. I plan to check out her blog and start following her. Thanks for the info.
I love the patterns and fabric choices!
The line is lovely! haven’t heard of it before but I’ll be looking now. Love the log cabin-y white & tan with splashy bits of color, my brain has been spinning thinking of ways to play with that kind of a quilt. Great post!
How lovely! I think of clean and bright when I see the projects and fabric. I love orange and how Bridgett uses it in her textiles. Fun, fun, fun!
I know this sounds very strange, but as I was browsing the Internet several months ago, I happened on a few of the Zen Chic patterns and my heart literally skipped a beat! The colors and the patterns matched perfectly with the kind of “modern” that I had always envisioned. Very inspiring! I already own two Zen Chic patterns and look forward to seeing and buying more.
I love Zen Chic – I think I came across them from another blog a few months ago.
I’m blown away by Zen Chic! Brigitte’s booth is amazing. Thank you for also directing us to her blog site. Her design and color sense is so clean and refreshing. I’ve added her blog to my home page for inspiration.

I’ve known Brigitte for a couple of years now, and it’s fantastic to see her succeed in her dreams
I wish her all the success she deserves in the months to come
(and anyway, who wouldn’t love to win some special fabrics as these truely are!)

Wow! That orange brick quilt is just amazing. This is the first I’ve heard of Zen Chic. Thanks for the introduction.
I had not heard of Zen Chic before but I really like the retro modern look of their stuff. It’s funny how it all comes around!
Like most of the comments, this is the first I have heard about Zen Chic. I love the orange and gray Kadinsky-esque quilt – I am also making an orange and gray quilt of my own. I also love the cross quilt at the bottom of the posting. I have seen several of those on the blogs and want to make one myself. Thank you for the introduction to this new company.
I’ve heard of it, but I’m glad to find out more. I love the plus quilt and the Swiss bag.
Thank you for highlighting Zen Chic and Brigitee. I have added her blog to my daily list.
Great giveaway! This is the first time i hear about Zen Chic and what i like the most is the simple and “clean” design of this brand
Oh my gosh. I absolutely love her sense of style, color, design, space–all of it. The quarter log cabin is brilliant.
This is my first introduction to Brigitte, and I believe I’ll be a fan for life.
Thank you for your generous giveaway. I’ll be thrilled if I am chosen.
I really love these patterns and choices of color!
These modern quilts do look so clear and peaceful!
I love this collection! In my quilting, I am drawn to modern prints and their bright colors. In this line, I see lots of the warm oranges and browns that I use in my furnishings, but rarely see in fabric. This line would give me the opportunity to create things that would blend with my surroundings.
Love the swiss bag! i have never heard of Zen Chic, but i will be following brigittes blog! Thanks for the chance to win some of those fabulous fabrics.
I love the black quilt with the circles and red binding that was hanging in her awesome booth from Market.

I had not heard of Zen Chic before. I think my favorite is the bag – very eye catching!
Yes, I have heard of the company and I love those patterns. My local shop has started to carry the quilt patterns. I want a bag pattern for sure!
i wasn’t familiar with zen chic, but now i think i’m in love! orange has never been high on my favourites list, but i’m looking at it in a whole new light now. i love the cross quilt and the orange brick quilt, but the circles are definitely my favourite. everything is so gorgeous!
I’d love to win this. That Swiss bag is on my must make list.
I’m new to Zen Chic and really love the White Labyrinth pattern. Fresh, clean lines, modern look and both the orange and mauve color ways! All is beautiful!
It took me quite some time to find the name of the fabulous quilt she displayed at Quilt Market (I spent an hour reading her blog before I went to her store site). White Labyrinth is beautiful and I would love to see that quilt in my living room!
Interior design inspired quilting with a modern display! Beautiful! Impressed with the simple modern design of the orange brick quilt. Well done.
I love the look of her patterns. Great to see new people joining the industry.
Terrific giveaway! Love Zen Chic since I first heard about her winning best booth at HQM. Love her fabric and designs because
First time hearing about Zen Chic–very modern…love all the patterns esp Brick Road. But the quilt with the circles for Quilt Market was outstanding! Ii would be delighted to win some of the Zen Chic scraps.
[...] all started with a photo I saw on the web from a Quilt Show. It wasn’t this pic, but a similar one, with no branding attached to it. Just someone’s random shot of the show. [...]
